Calling All Pin-up Pets
Does your dog have the makings to be Mr. December? Is your cat the future Ms March? We are looking for 12 photogenic pets to be featured in The Toronto Humane Society’s New Beginnings calendar.
By entering your furry friend into the Pet Photo Contest you could potentially win a spot in our 2009 calendar. So dust off your camera, set up the lighting and get ready for your pet to be an instant celebrity.
Rules of the Calendar Contest
- All photos must be 9 x 12 or 8 x 10 in colour, horizontal layout and contain animals only.
- Digital pictures are preferred over film. Adjust digital image sizes to the highest resolution and save pictures as a .tif file.
- We will only accept pictures that have not been altered with editing software.
- Polaroid or copyrighted professional photographs cannot be accepted.
- Photos become property of The Toronto Humane Society and will not be returned. We also reserve the right to use them for other fundraising purposes.
- Photos depicting cats outdoors, inhumane training collars or visibly distressed animals will not be considered.
- Contest runs from November 1 2007, to April 27, 2008.
Tips for Taking a Great Picture
The Model
- Make sure your pet is content and comfortable; let her channel the inner diva.
- Take the picture with your pet’s safety in mind—don’t try anything that is dangerous just for creativity’s sake.
- The animal should be in a neutral, humane setting looking at the camera, preferably at eye level.
- An assistant can help keep your animal still so that you can focus on taking a winning photo. This will also keep you from getting impatient with your subject.
On Location
- Keep the background simple and uncluttered so as not to distract from the focus of the picture—your pet.
- If your pet is dark-coloured, take the photo in front of a lighter background.
- If your pet is light-coloured, take the photo in front of a darker background.
- Photos representing the changing seasons are desired, especially winter scenes.
Let There Be Light
- Natural light is better than flash. The more light available, the more detail your camera will catch.
- If your pet is dark- coloured, be wary of direct sunlight as it increases shadows.
