SHELTER MANAGER/OPERATIONS MANAGER
DEFINITION
Plans, co-ordinates, supervises the operations of the animal shelter and any of its subsidiaries and satellite centers, to include supervision and hiring of animal care staff and maintaining, cleaning and providing care for all animals in the shelter.
CLASS
This class of employee is supervisory. It is characterized by the responsibility to supervise daily operations and activities of other Supervisors and Animal Care Workers. This position interacts closely with the Chief Veterinarian, the CEO, Client Care Manager and Maintenance Department.
SUPERVISION
Receives direction from the CEO.
Provides supervision to Lead Hands and Animal Care Workers.
DUTIES PERFORMED
• Supervises, directs and evaluates all assigned staff, including processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, evaluation and the performance appraisal of assigned staff.
• Evaluates resumes, conducts interviews and assists with recruitment and selection.
• Co-ordinates daily work activities, organizes, prioritizes and assigns work. Monitors status of work and inspects completed work.
• Provides technical expertise, ensures compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
• Is responsible for all Health and Safety training and ensures that all Health and Safety Regulations are strictly observed.
• Maintains documentation including work schedules, employee records and disciplinary processes.
• Conducts performance reviews, applies corrective measures, evaluates performance and applies discipline.
• Interacts closely with veterinary staff including veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Is responsible for close interaction and communication with the Chief Veterinarian and Client Care Manager.
• Prepares and completes a variety of logs, forms and reports.

• Interact with other supervisors, veterinarians, directors and subordinates, where necessary. The ability to interact and communicate with members of the public is also required.
• Comprehend, interpret, explain and enforce various laws and regulations, where necessary.
• Precisely follow safety procedures and protocols.
• Assemble and maintain various records and logs and make written and verbal reports.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING
• Five (5) years of progressive work experience in animal care/handling or shelter operations.
OR
• Two (2) year College level diploma or three (3) year Bachelor degree or five (5) years vocational training in a suitable field. Three (3) years experience in an animal care/handling or shelter environment. Experience gained in a hospital, social welfare or hospice would also be deemed acceptable.
