Cats and FIV — a Testimonial
The following letter was sent from a happy guardian of two FIV+ cats:
I am just writing because I was so glad to see the section on your website for FIV positive cats available for adoption. I have always had respect for The Toronto Humane Society, but the fact that you give these cats so much support only increases that respect. I have two cats that are FIV positive. One was adopted and one taken in as a stray. I've had them both for a few years now and so far they are very healthy and happy. I am hopeful that with proper care and treatment, they will live long lives.
It is so important that accurate information is provided about the disease to potential adopters, so that people don't overreact to the diagnosis. Many believe it to be a death sentence and opt to euthanize an otherwise healthy animal. In the future when I am torn between so many animal rescue organizations in need of support, I am much more likely to donate to the THS simply due to your incredible track record and now, also, because I can see that you care for animals that others would give up on undeservedly. When the horrible day comes that one of my cats passes on, I will definitely be looking to the THS when it comes to adopting a new companion animal.
Sincerest regards,
[Undisclosed sender]
p.s. My veterinarian uses Interferon in the treatment of FIV in my cats, so far with excellent success. You'd never know they weren't completely disease-free. This is something you may want to mention to potential adopters as it is quite inexpensive, but a good form of treatment.
