We adopted our dog (who was named Sadie at the time by The THS) from The Toronto Humane Society in August of 1997. We decided Sadie was too sad for this happy dog. We named her Bjunis (Be-yoo-ness).
We figure she is a staff/pointer cross, but who knows. She was very quiet when we saw her in the shelter- the only dog not barking. She had been in the shelter for two weeks and had been found in Riverdale park. We had looked at all the dogs, and decided that we would not get one the first day. We wanted to think carefully and be rational, but on the drive home, we both decided that we wanted her.
We rushed back the very next day as soon as The THS was open in case someone had taken her already. There she was and she raised her paw to my husband. We went through the interview process and the interviewer seemed skeptical that we would want her after seeing how energetic and hyper she was outside. She was like a different dog!
We didn't know any better: we liked her even more and took her home. We have never regretted it since. As soon as we got in, she curled up at my feet as I did the dishes. We seemed to all bond right away. We have been through a lot with her over the years, and she has always been there for a romp outside or a cuddle on the couch. She still is an extremely enthusiastic greeter, and has an impish sense of humour. She doesn't like other dogs much, but loves our own other dog. She LOVES people, but is particularly loyal with us. She is is such a character and such a wonderful part of our lives. She has changed our lives forever. I have never understood why anyone would give her up.
I am so glad The Toronto Humane Society is doing what they are to help the lives of animals.
