Hapoo

Hapoo

"Hapoo was found by the Toronto Police while he was roaming the streets with a serious hind injury, and was brought to the Toronto Humane Society. The staff at the THS estimated his age to be a little over two years then (2003), and named him Jazz. He was operated on at the Toronto Humane Society before having a foster mom for 3 weeks in order to recover from his surgery. Soon he was ready to be adopted. I believe it is just amazing that at the same time I, who have always been very afraid of dogs, suddenly wished to adopt one.

I looked up the website of The Toronto Humane Society one evening and fell in love with this adorable terrier mix (now I know he is a schnoodle- a cross between a schnauzer terrier and a poodle), and just wished he would still be there when I visited the THS adoption centre the next day. I recognized him as soon as I saw this little salt-and-pepper dog standing and barking at the visitors. He was the most smart-looking and adorable dog that I had even seen. I sat in front of his crate and talked to him gently, and he calmed down. He then passed his toy carrot to me under the crate door to play with me. I dropped it inside for him. He passed it to me again. We did this several times... but I was anxious to fill out the adoption form on time so I could take him home with me.

That was the best day of my life and he has been with us for more than three wonderful years now. During the first days, he didn't respond to “Jazz”, the new name that the THS had given gave him. I re-named him “Hapoo”, which means “doggie” in Persian (children's language) and he loves his name. He is sweet, loving and extremely smart, and even though he stays mostly indoors, his presence and his "watchdog" personality have protected me and my home since his arrival, despite his small size. I really can't imagine not having him by my side.

Soon I am moving to my new home where my mother cannot be with him during the day when I go to work, so I have decided to adopt a second dog to keep him company during the day and for good.

I owe all this happiness to the very hard-working and dedicated staff at the Toronto Humane Society as well as to the Toronto Police for bringing a helpless little schnoodle to the shelter. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"

Atosa Roshan.
