Cat Adoption Blitz a Record-breaking Success

TORONTO (August 1, 2005) – The Toronto Humane Society, a world-wide leader in animal rescue and placement, has successfully completed an adoption marathon in which 304 cats and kittens were matched with loving homes.

"The community opened its heart as never before,” said Society President, Tim Trow. "They came from Toronto, across the GTA and beyond to give homes to over 500 homeless cats and kittens in the shelter."

The Toronto Humane Society accepts all animals. "No animal, no matter how sick, frightened or abused, is ever turned away," said Trow. "Our veterinarians and behaviourists work wonders."

As the blitz ended, Trow admitted that the high bar the Society sets itself almost couldn't be met. "The extreme heat in July slowed adoptions and the shelter was packed. When we rescued 59 cats from two homes last Wednesday and Thursday, we had reached saturation point."

"Local media and the Society's over 100,000 members and financial contributors successfully got the word out," said Trow. "That's why we volunteer, because we see the best side of human nature when it comes to animals."

In 2004 The Toronto Humane Society found loving new homes for 5,386 cats and kittens. As a not-for-profit organization the Society is funded solely through charitable donations. Its mission is to promote the humane care and protection of all animals and to prevent cruelty and suffering.
