(Toronto- August 2005) The Toronto Humane Society spent a week with the tennis pros after being invited to attend this year's Roger's Cup, held at the Rexall Centre at York University. The invitation at the request of tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who competed this year in the doubles category. Not only is Navratilova an animal-lover (she has nine dogs of her own!) but she is also very active in fundraising for animal shelters across North America. she often has "puppy parks" set up at her tournaments, where she and other players can leave their dogs during their games. This Year, Navratilova brought her Chihuahua Chloe with her.
The folks at The Toronto Humane Society booth raised awareness and donations, accompanied by a different staff animal each day. Navratilova donated her time throughout the tournament week, stopping by the booth to sign autographs for the public in return for a donation to The Toronto Humane Society. At the end of the week, she matched the funds raised with a donation of her own.
Thanks to Ms. Navratilova for her kind generosity!
