Some call the carriage horses of Manhattan historic and a necessary tourist attraction. We call it an accident waiting to happen. Like the incident which killed this 13 year old mare on Sept. 15.

Highlights of the Audit report:
- No coordination between the Department of Health and the Department of Consumer Affairs.
- High incidence of misidentifications. The same ID# referring to different horses each year is evidence of "switching horses - or very bad record-keeping."
- Horses often end up standing in filthy water and their own waste.
- Lack of carriage inspections and checks by Health Department veterinarians during audit period.

For Manhattan carriage horses, September 15, 2007 will be a day in infamy as yet another horse is killed.

One more poor carriage horse has been killed in one of two accidents that occured on September 15 in Manhattan. The horse was terrified onto the sidewalks showing the dangers to people as well as horses.

The horror of the horse's painful suffering and death occured while the ink is still wet on the New York Comptroller's seathing audit of the carriage horse industry and the inhumane conditions for the horses.

There will be a vigil held in New York on Thursday, September 20 from 5:30 - 7:30pm to honour the lives of the horses most recently killed in the name of pleasing tourists, such as ourselves, from around the world. For more information on the vigil please refer to www.banhdc.org

Write Mayor Bloomberg and tell him how much more you would like to visit New York if the poor horses were not forced to pull heavy carriages in Manhattan traffic. You can also help by joining in The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages'postcard campaign calling on the mayor’s office for action. To participate just email coalitionbanhdc@gmail.com and tell them how many copies of the card you would like plus your mailing address.

Take action now to help these poor horses. Help put an end to their tireless work and the constant danger of being on the streets of Manhattan. Call on New York to follow the lead of other major centres like London, Paris and Toronto and ban the carriage horse industry and let these animals find a peaceful retirement outside the city.

For more information check out the latest article in the NY Times and leave a post on its blog with your thoughts on Smoothie's death and the carriage horse industry. You can also refer to:
