McGuinty’s Law Comes for Poor JR.

Posted on: Friday, September 27/07

JR taken into custodyMcGuinty’s Law closes the door on JR’s future

They came today for JR., a dog our veterinarian neutered and says is healthy and adoptable. They got a court warrant so we couldn’t protect him.

Now he sits in terror in the City Pound, condemned because they say he’s a pitbull who’s bitten, even though he’s never had a trial. He must wait in solitary confinement for what we fear is the barbaric inevitable: a death sentence under McGuinty’s Law.

It’s not that the community should not protect itself from dangerous dogs. But why isn’t this something for veterinarians and other professionals to investigate? If necessary they are trained to decide that there’s no other recourse other than to put a badly damaged dog down.

Instead there is the over-kill of McGuinty’s law. A search warrant surreptitiously obtained before a Justice of the Peace, uniformed officers, official vehicles and now ‘jail’ and the dog-pole for JR. JR is a dog. He doesn’t know what he’s done wrong. Mr. MgGuinty: Have the guts to regulate puppy mills properly and those who shouldn’t own dogs at all.
