Though we love all the animals here at The Toronto Humane Society equally, there's no denying shelter staff often harbor a sweet spot for someone in particular - especially if that someone has been at the shelter for a while.
Unfortunately senior animals and those with behaviour or medical issues sometimes get overlooked by prospective owners but that doesn't mean they don't make fantastic companions.
That's why a new campaign called "Staff Picks" was developed. It aims to highlight those hidden gems in our shelter to potential adopters.
Here's what some of our staff had to say about some of their favourites:

Fifi (15112304) Staff Member: Zana, Adoption Manager
I have only recently gotten to know Fifi. And admittedly, it is only because she has been at the shelter a good while. (And also because she has a “reputation”.)
To be truthful, she reminds of my old kitty. From her black nose to her green eyes, she is almost exactly the same. And that is including her “spicy” side.
Fifi is a tricky girl. She has a darling face -natural look of kitten curiosity, which compels people to look at her and touch her. But Fifi is all business. Her mama told her to not talk to strangers and to this day I may only scratch her cheek, and that is only if I have observed proper protocol first:
1. Hand sniff
2. Move slowly
3. Two cheek scratch maximum - and then I have to hurry up and get to the playing part of our visit!
Fifi has a wicked hunting streak. She loves her green feather wand toy the best. She is alert and speedy and acts like a kitten. She is a delight to watch. I am not sure who has more fun, her or me.
Her situation breaks my heart. She truly does not like other cats. And this shelter is filled with them. She can smell them, she can hear them, and she sometimes gets the occasional glimpse of them. It is no wonder that she is on her guard. She has been in defense mode since she arrived.
I wish I could offer her more of a second chance. I cannot take her home (I have two cats and a dog and allergic husband). That is why I am writing this to you. I know that adopting a kitty with a history is daunting. But I also know that there is a home for everyone. I want someone to take a chance on Fifi, because I guarantee that after you get to know her, you will realize that she was the one that took a chance on you.

Toby (15112304) Staff Member: Jessica, Feline Behaviour Assistant
Toby was surrendered because she gained too much weight in her previous home, and couldn’t properly clean herself. She was also brought in for house soiling. She was sent to our feline behaviour department to help with her litter box skills.
Having spent time in our office, she melted my heart every day. She would greet me in the morning, come and snuggle on my lap during the day and kindly ask (with head butts and kisses) that I give her the love and attention.
Every day I would come in and pray that she started using her litter box, so we could send her to adoption and others could see what an amazing little girl she is. With a lot of work from the vets and techs, and volunteers she started to become comfortable with using her litter box again. And I am ecstatic! She has been here too long, and I’m dumbfounded as to why she’s still sitting in her cage.
She’s just as sweet as she is beautiful and will roll around forever for belly rubs. She is more like a dog than a cat. She even comes when you call her name. She is just the sweetest thing ever and I couldn’t imagine a better feline companion for anyone.

Lola (14382928) Staff Member: Tess, Canine Adoption Counselor
Lola is a misunderstood lady. She has experienced more than her fair share of instability in the most important developmental months of her life. Despite her less than ideal start in life, this girl is one smart cookie. She's got her commands down pat and is always eager to learn more.
Lola is a one in an million and we are holding out for that perfect home that fits her like a glove. This top dog needs a top notch leader: a firm and fair family who will show her that there is nothing wrong with being a backseat driver.
Lola is a high maintenance type of gal, Lola is looking for her soul mate and won't settle for anything less - and that is what I love about her. That and the fact that she is the whole package: sharp as a tack with a glam look!
Have you trained dogs before? Looking for a challenge? My girl just may be the girl for you.

BooBoo(15886347) Staff Member: Stacey, Canine Adoption, Team Lead
BooBoo's name makes him sound like a pushover, but don't be fooled! This stout boy has a real hard hitting personality: he knows what he likes and he's sticking to his game.
I've seen the softer side of this handsome boy, and he is great! He's got a few favorite scratching spots (behind the ears and down his neck) that make him melt. At first he didn't like a good pet but now he's warmed up to the idea and actually gives me the "eyes" for an ear scratch.
BooBoo is amazing at playing hard to get. But already, with time and patience his shyness can only last for so long before curiosity gets the better of him.
Although he may be on the hefty side for a chihuahua, BooBoo walks like a star. His stride is confident and carefree as he cruises down the street. He's got a few pounds to lose and he's committed to his fitness goal - bring him home and prepare to be active! BooBoo is a special character and brings a smile to my face each time I see him jog by on his daily walks.

Fifi (12915321) Staff Member: Jennifer, Feline Adoption Counselor
I would like you to meet my favorite shelter cat Fifi. She has a big personality and a sad story that I would like to tell you. Fifi's owners couldn't care for her anymore and surrender her to our shelter.
At first Fifi was afraid of everything here! There were so many strange new smells, sounds, and people. Fifi has been here for 11 months now and although she has become more comfortable with the shelter environment she is still scared sometimes. You see, Fifi is a very shy girl and she needs stability in her life. She simply needs a stable and loving home so she can feel safe and have a human of her very own to love and to play with.
Fifi needs a home without other animals or young children and an experienced owner who understands she needs time to build a trusting relationship. If you think you can give Fifi a chance you will discover soon enough that she's a wonderful companion cat. She's super cute and playful and she has a great sense of humor.
Fifi will make you laugh and give you all her love! Please just give her a chance.

Porsha (15013348) Staff Member: Lezley, Shelter worker
Porsha is one special lady! She is a pure bred Dutch rabbit who would prefer to be the only rabbit in your life. It takes a bit of time for her to get to know you, but once she does I know she will make an excellent companion. She is a bit protective over her personal space, and may display displeasure upon entering it. I've found she is easily distracted with a bowl of food or treat to clean her litter box and blanket. She may not like having people in her space, but always says "Thank you" for fresh hay with a "binkie" or two.
Porsha loves fresh veggies (we haven't found a veggie she doesn't like!) and cardboard toys. She loves to be held and has been known to fall asleep in our volunteers arms. She would benefit from regular exercise outside of her pen to burn off her excess energy.
Porsha is a truly one of a kind rabbit. I hope she will find a forever home with people who will learn to love all of her nuances like I do.

Betz (13146894) Staff Member: Liz, Feline Adoption Counselor
When I first started working at THS I was overwhelmed by the number of cats needing homes. For every cat I adopted out, there were a dozen more waiting for homes and just as deserving.
I have now been working at the shelter long enough to see that with time, every cat ultimately finds a home. I have seen cats I never thought would be adopted: the overweight ones, the diabetics, those with behaviour issues, amputated limbs, chosen by some kindhearted, animal lover who falls in love despite the challenges.
There's no question that these cats come with added "baggage", and let's face it, it's a lot easier to take a two month old, healthy kitten home. But there's something special that happens when you take a "needy" cat home. Betz is one of those "needy" cats.
Betz came to the shelter last spring as an eleven year old, FIV cat. FIV is an immune suppressed condition that is perfectly manageable. While Betz is very healthy, his emotional state has suffered greatly. The longer he spent in his cage, the more cranky and depressed he became. Just approaching him was enough to send him into a hissing fit. Of course, he's been in a cage since May so it's understandable that he would get frustrated. Potential adopters never seemed to be interested in him perhaps because they didn't understand about FIV or simply because he never endeared himself to people. He was never one to be standing at the front of the cage, meowing as if to say, "pick me, pick me."
But then something remarkable happened. Betz went to live in one of the offices here at the shelter and he became an entirely different cat. Instead of hissing he would meow when you came to visit him. With more space and a little more freedom, Betz was transformed into a loving, relaxed, healthy feline.
Imagine what he would be like in a real home, with space and freedom and someone to love him.
P.S.
I took a long time resident of the shelter home a few months ago. People are always saying how great I am to have given my FIV cat, Oliver, a good home. But the truth is, Oliver has given me so much more than I've given him. He loves me, he's always happy to see me. He runs to the front hall to greet me every day after work. He sits in my lap when I'm reading the paper and he lies in my bed, keeping me company through the night. He's been a joy since the day I first brought him home.
So I wait, for the day when Betz will find his rightful place in someone's heart and spend his senior years, out of a cage and in a loving home.

Shilo (15021554) Staff Member: Stephanie, Front Desk
My staff pick, for sure, is Shilo! A real sweetheart, Shilo is keen to spend her summer having bbq's and chillin' in your yard.
Shilo can be shy when you first approach her, a scratch under the chin then behind the ears soon fixes that though, she's all yours when given one-on-one affection!
Shilo would thrive in a quiet, consistent household, where she can be the queen of the castle, and the only pet vying for your attention. Somebody who's home a lot and can spend time making this lovely lady feel safe and secure (at last); this is what I envisage for Shilo.
Sadly, Shilo is often passed-by here at THS, she's often curled up at the back of her kennel; dreaming of her forever home. She also suffers epilepsy which is managed through day-to-day medication. Please don't let that deter you, it would be a loss not only for Shilo, but for you too!
Shilo is a playful, strong willed, friendly girl, who, when on walks, has a spring in her step and an ever wagging tail. To add to the list of this girls credits, she's a sucker for cuddle time.
Do you have room in your heart for a girl like Shilo?

Coco (15554674) Staff Member: Lucero, Canine Adoption Counselor
When I saw Coco arrive for the first time to our shelter - already a month ago - I really liked her. It made me feel so sad to think that such a tiny and lively looking dog had lost her home and her family.
It appeared to me that she stood out from the other dogs firstly because of the way in which she looks at you, clearly denoting an unyielding personality and also because her barking style is very unique (you'll need to come and listen for yourself!).
There is no question that coco likes things her way. But I have no doubt that she will find a home that has the experience and patience to guide her. I am sure that once Coco feels safe at home, she will be a faithful and lasting companion.
Coco has the perfect combination of an amusing, witty and loving personality with a noble and autonomous spirit.
If you are looking for uniqueness and lots of personality Coco is definitely the dog for you!

Lucy (15013321) Staff Member: Kimberly, Special Species Adoption Counselor
Little Lucy has been here two months and I can't understand why. She is a young, petite bun with beautiful blue eyes and a lovely personality.
Maybe it's because she isn't the "cutest" rabbit in the room - it's hard to compete with babies, lionheads and lops. Or because she isn't a special needs rabbit with medical issues, deformities, or advanced age and isn't winning anyone over with her "hard-luck" story. Or perhaps the reason she is being overlooked is because she is just so sweet and good-natured. She isn't the most outgoing rabbit, certainly not the type to run to greet visitors at the bars of her pen, but she isn't excessively shy or aggressive, and doesn't have any notable behavioural issues more experienced adopters might be looking to work with.
If anything, it's the fact that she's just a great, easy-going rabbit that is holding her back. It's hard to stand out in a shelter, but Lucy is truly a wonderful girl and deserves the chance to shine. She wants to be loved, like anyone else, but is passed by too often. She would make an amazing companion for almost any adopter and would happily return all the love and attention she gets, when given the chance. She is also very interested in, and affectionate with whatever rabbit is placed beside her and would be a great choice for a bonding partner.
Lucy is very special in her own quiet way. If you take the time to give her a second look, I know you'll discover all of her wonderful qualities just like I have. Please give this girl the chance to show you just how great she is!

RikiTik (14334224) Staff Member: Bridget, Adoption Counselor
When I first met RikiTik, I noticed his beautiful markings and his outgoing personality and I thought for sure that he would be adopted in no time. I envisioned a home with lots of space where he could run and play to his heart's content. I imagined him rolling over for belly rubs in his warm, cozy home with a family to call his own. And I dreamed of him proudly showing off his newly learned tricks for a favorite treat and some much deserved praise. As he sits in his kennel day after day, watching potential adopters walk by, I can't help but wonder if he dreams of these things too.
His size is deceiving - at the young age of one, he is still very much an overgrown puppy with all of the endearing playfulness and occasional mischievousness that goes along with it. With a strong and experienced owner, he is eager to learn - he just needs a chance to show what he is capable of. It's true that his new owners must have the patience and determination to give him the opportunity to succeed but they will be rewarded with his loyalty, love, and affection for years to come.

Tillie (13855311) Staff Member: Dr Linda, Staff Veterinarian
Imagine living your life in a cage, watching those around you come and go, adopted by loving people who want to give them a home. Watching, always watching with huge, sad eyes, always imagining yourself in the place of the younger, prettier kittens, or even the grizzled old tomcats.
After the first few months of hopeful purring whenever a potential owner glanced at you, you might just give up. Every cat you know has either found a home, or will soon. Every cat except you.
Tillie has a neurological problem that will sometimes cause him to have 'accidents.' He uses his litterbox for urination, but has partial fecal incontinence, so people overlook his wonderful personality, his affectionate nature and his playfulness. There are creative ways to deal with his particular issue - like kitty diapers. Although Tillie has been long overlooked, the sweetness in him still shines through. He's still hoping for that forever home.
Tillie is a rare gem of a cat, and he doesn't have to spend any longer in a shelter. All you have to do is adopt him. That way, Tillie will have found a wonderful home and a loving friend, and you will have a perfect pet, whether you live alone, have kids, or anything in between!
Give a kitty a chance - come and adopt Tillie.

Ashley (13824348) Staff Member: Heather, Animal Care Worker
If you're looking for a walking island, you've found her. Ashley is one of the most beautiful red eared sliders I have encountered. Don't be fooled by her size at about eight inches in length, she's got a heart of gold. Ashley is a little nervous when it comes to her pond, but provide her with some terrain and she will discover the seven wonders of your world. She is easy to handle and is learning that humans are her friends. She is the kind of turtle who can adjust to about anyone if you give her the time.
Turtles are highly overlooked once they start growing because of their size and their life-span. Although Ashley is only ten years old, she still has decades ahead of her. Another challenge is the responsibility and time needed to care for such a species, but with the right mind-set and companionship, you will not find another turtle like her. Although these creatures are a challenge to maintain, the bond formed is worth the work.
If you're looking for an aquatic reptile with personality, Ashley is your girl. Come on in and meet this gorgeous terrapin, she's awaiting your visit!

FiFi (12915321) Staff Member: Ashley, Victoria Park Shelter Worker
Fifi loves to lounge on her favorite pillow for hours on end. Fifi and I have become quite close. She knows her name and loves to play with laser pointers and wands.
Fifi answers to her name when I call her and will roll over on her back for a treat. So cute!
She will want to be the only cat in her new loving home. I am looking forward to the day she finds that special someone.

Baria (12184676) Staff Member: Dr. Jacques Messier, THS CEO
Baria has been waiting for that special someone to bring her home for long enough. She has taken matters into her own paws. Every morning Baria waits for THS CEO Jacques Messier. She patrols the executive offices, keeping a close eye on everyone.
But Baria isn't all work and no play. She does enjoy playing tricks and getting in the middle of everything. She is an engaging social butterfly who wants to know exactly what you are doing. But at the end of the day, everyone goes home to their families. Baria stays at the shelter, waiting for tomorrow. Although we enjoy her visits, Baria would enjoy her own home to go home to even more.

Baria (12184676) Staff Member: Zana, Shelter Manager
I am sad to say that I met Baria a year ago. When I booked her into the shelter, I knew it would take time to find her a new home. (Middle aged kitties that want to be in charge are often the last sort of cat to be considered for adoption) But honestly, I had no idea it would take this long.
I was impressed that Baria's previous owner, who was looking to start a new life, was dedicated enough to have her travel from Amman Jordan to Toronto. Not an easy or inexpensive venture. (Most people rehome their pets instead of moving with them). Baria's owner's life changed again after several years. Surrendering her to the Toronto Humane Society was the only remaining option.
Now it is true that Baria hasn't ever really been an accommodating girl. She appears to enjoy taunting other cats and challenging staff. She plays favourites, is demanding and doesn't like to share. On a number of occasions she has been disruptive in our executive meetings. She has invaded staff lockers, visited the ladies room and ridden the elevator. Truly, she has been a going concern.
With the arrival of our new CEO however, I have come to know her more demure side. Baria met Jacques and seemed almost smitten. She sprawls on his desk, she waits outside his office door. She will mew delicately when the door is closed.
We have made accommodations for this kitty to help her be happier and hopefully more adoptable. She has hours of out-of-cage time every morning before adoptions open. We have given her a cage away from all other cats so as to not be disgruntled and we have placed it where we hope people will notice her. We changed her name because we wondered if "Badria" was sounding too "bad" for potential adopters. She was the first featured animal in both the "Furever Yours" and "Staff Picks" campaigns. These initiatives were created to find new ways to feature over-looked shelter animals. But she is still here.
What I haven't told you is that she is a striking-looking cat. She is a curious, social and playful girl. It is simply that she has opinions that she doesn't mind expressing.
She doesn't have a bad life. She has freedom, she has social contact. But she doesn't have a home. And I refuse to believe that there isn't a home for her somewhere out there.

Bobo (14525611) Staff Member: Shas, Canine Behaviour Specialist
Bobo was rescued from the streets of Taiwan, being kicked around by people for existing.
But he refuses to let his horrible past change his future.
He still has the spirit to survive and please his owners.
He knows his stuff, if you know yours.
He is not every body's dog - even though he has decided to move on, his past will follow him.
He needs someone with a similar spirit and who has a strong will to do well.
The suitable home must have: unlimited patience, experience with fearful dogs, live in a house, have no children around, preferably no other dogs, a "can do" attitude and never give up.
Are you that special?

Royce (13711149) Staff Member: Rachelle, Fundraising Coordinator
Royce was surrendered to the THS way back in July and he is more than ready to go to his new, loving home. The first time I met Royce, he greeted me with a cute little chirpy meow and gently climbed into my arms. He showed me immediately just how much of a sweet, calm and trusting big teddy bear of a cat he really is. Subsequent visits have provided more snuggling time between Royce and I and he is always very happy to relax in my arms or hang out on my lap. During our visits, this laid-back, older guy also loves to sit by the window watching the world go by. And when the wand toy comes out, well so does the kitten in him - he loves to play!
Royce may get overlooked more often than other cats because of his diabetes condition. However, anyone considering adopting this big cuddle bug should not be intimidated by his condition; it is easily managed and the cost to care for a diabetic cat is relatively low. And although Royce gets his insulin needle everyday, he doesn't even flinch because the needle is so tiny. More encouraging, since arriving at THS, Royce has been on a special diabetic diet and since he actually seems to be heading towards remission, the amount of insulin required each day has been reduced. It is quite possible he may be in remission at some point in the near future.
Staff and volunteers agree - Royce is worth the extra little bit of TLC needed to manage his condition. Please come down to the shelter to visit this sweet guy. Feline Adoption staff will be happy to talk to you about how to care for a diabetic cat and how the THS can make the transition of a diabetic cat into your home easier!
Royce looks forward to meeting you!

Polly (14470385) Staff Member: Stacey, Canine Adoption Counselor, Team Lead
I can't say enough good things about Polly. From her unique curly coat to her vibrant personality she is a gem! She has great positive energy and loves attention.
This gal especially loves it when you rub her side right behind her front leg. She leans in against your legs and melts as she enjoys her "spot" being rubbed. Sometimes she does a little bunny hop with her two back legs together as a result of her recovering from hip surgery and it always makes me laugh a little.
Polly is a sweet girl and it's sad to say she's been here for quite some time. Give this pretty girl a look! You'll love her the moment you see her.

Simba (15573194) Staff Member: Jazzmine, Canine Behaviour Department
If I'm having one of those days this big goofy boy with a strong, waggy tail who's still a puppy at heart will certainly put a smile on my face.
I've got a real soft spot for this incredibly smart boy and all it took was a few throws of a tennis ball now I've got a friend for life! (well, I actually threw until my arm could take no more!)
Simba just about has his basic obedience down pat and is really eager to learn and please and it's so easy (and tempting) to see how effortlessly he could fit right into my family and really flourish with firm but fair leadership.
I can picture how this good natured boy would be such a great companion in my active life but also settle so nicely at the end of a long day.
If I had any more room at the Inn (so to speak), Simba would already be at home with me, as in yesterday!
Simba is really quite affectionate and charming and the best is yet to come once he has finally settled into his new forever home. As much as I will miss him I am sure there is someonelse out there in need of the smiles that he so ingenuously gives to me.

Bella (14863980) Staff Member: Heidi, Feline Adoption Counselor
I'm going to keep this simple because Bella's needs are simple.
She is simply the most loving and adorable cat you will ever meet. She loves hiding under her blankets but when you call her name she quickly comes out chatting to you with her soft squeaky meow and staring into your soul with her big emerald eyes. I find it hard to resist speaking baby talk to her and pinching her cute round face whenever I pass by her cage. She beckons you to love her and is begging you to give her a second chance.
Bella is an 11 year old cat currently looking for a Palliative Foster parent. What this means is that due to Bella's circumstances she needs a nice quiet and simple home where she can be loved unconditionally in this final chapter of her life. As a Palliative Foster, Bella's medical needs are cared for by the Toronto Humane Society, but her emotional needs are met by you.
I'm not saying this is going to be easy.
It can be emotionally difficult taking in an animal who may not have a long life ahead of them, but you have to see this from a very different point of view. This isn't about what is best for you; it is what is best for Bella and being scared to emotionally invest in a cat like Bella or to feel sad knowing you will lose a loving friend sooner rather than later only means Bella spends more time feeling abandoned, lonely and unloved. This is time that Bella may not have. Now of course, we cannot predict the future, but all we know is that we can shape it into one where Bella finds that special someone who is selfless and willing to make the remainder of Bella's time, however long it is, the best she's ever known.
Will you be a hero for Bella?

Jax (14556093) Staff Member: Jenny Canine adoption counselor
I first met Jax a few months ago when he first arrived here at the THS. I took an instant shine to him, and I started coming in early for my shift to take him for long, luxurious walks around the neighborhood. Needless to say, he's a real dream - We both love to run, and after a few minutes of getting some of that famous Shepherd energy out, he walks like a superstar! And he really is a smart fellow as well - He knows his basic obedience, and is always eager to learn more!
Jax and I really are like kindred spirits; perhaps a little misunderstood, and we can both be pretty picky with our companions. Jax is also one of the longer stay dogs here at the THS; he's been here since November 2011. Black dogs usually have a harder time being adopted, but I don't see why - With that winning smile and charming personality, I can't see how he hasn't be snatched up yet! I'm hoping he'll find his forever home soon.

Stanley (14280474) Staff Member: Connie, Shelter Worker
My Staff Pick is definitely Stanley.
I met Stanley in the main clinic where he was receiving medical attention for a leg injury. I was very much taken by Stanley in the way he tolerated all the medical interventions he needed to get him back to the great dog he is today.
Stanley thrives on being asked to perform when asked. He will sit, shake paws and lay down on command. When he goes into a down position he tends to roll over to have his belly rubbed. He becomes excited when asked to do things and wants to play. He likes playing fetch with a ball, and will drop it for you occasionally!
I know he doesn't "show" well. He gets so excited and noisy in his cage when people visit him. But folks, Stanley is only a year and ten months old and has a lot of play in him. He has a great desire to be further trained so he can be the best stand-up dog a family could ever want.
This is my Stanley.

Puffy (14887507) Staff Member: Tess, Canine Adoption Counselor
Puffy, or "The Puff" as I like to call him, didn't catch my attention right away. Evidently, his overweight appearance distracted from what I soon discovered was his absolutely remarkable personality. The first thing you'll notice upon coming into contact with this full-figured boy is that he is the biggest cuddler ever, nuzzling you with his head and pawing for more, more, more attention!
Puffy has experienced a lot of instability in his life, having been bounced from shelter to shelter, and can be a bit unsure of children or anyone else who might approach too quickly- he just doesn't know what their intentions are! All Puffy really needs is a loving, patient home where he can relax for the rest of his life with human companions who he really trusts. Will you be the one to give dignified Puffy the second chance he deserves?

Stevie (14014058) Staff Member: Tess, Canine Adoption Counselor
I first met Stevie when some people brought her in on a busy day at the THS after finding her wandering around the streets, blind. They had named her "Sophie", and the first thing that I noticed were her eyes. They were so swollen that her eyeballs were barely visible, and just looking at her little face broke my heart.
Five minutes after she was dropped off, I had agreed to foster the little two month old blind kitten for about a month until she was a bit older. Four months later, Sophie is now Stevie (after Fleetwood Mac front woman Stevie Nicks) and she's finally ready for adoption. This sweet girl has hung on through multiple procedures of varying invasiveness and has kept her upbeat personality through all of it.
At this point in time, she does not require any more surgery (phew!) but this may change in the future and it's important that her new family is prepared for this possibility. Although she is mostly blind, Stevie is very much like any other kitten- playful, affectionate and energetic (although she might walk into a wall or two)! In fact, every day when I arrive home, Stevie is waiting right at the door, ready with an abundance of kisses to show her appreciation that I've finally returned.
Although I'll be sad to see her go, I am excited to send her off to a permanent, understanding home where she can play and snuggle to her heart's content. If you think that you have the time, patience and commitment to provide this girl a home for the rest of her life, I promise you that you won't regret it!

Fala (14853706) Staff Member: Stephanie, Call Center and Front Desk
Fala is such a beautiful, lovely girl - her photos really don't do her justice.
I remember seeing Fala when she first came to us here at the THS (around 3 months ago), she had the saddest eyes and was looking pretty confused about her recent upheaval. Since then, she has blossomed and is always the dog at the very front of her kennel, curiously watching the world go by. She always gets up to say "hello," when I walk through the rooms, with a wagging tail and real spunky personality. It's sad that Fala has been here so long; unfortunately, black dogs often get overlooked here at the shelter. Really though, it's what's on the inside that counts; she's full of charm and is sure to keep you entertained!
Fala gets slightly over-excited at times, she loves attention and gets pretty animated when she sees you coming and puts on a bit of a display. Don't let that scare you off: Fala just so has so much to give. I can't wait for her to find that forever home where she'll settle in and be appreciated for the character she is!
It's so sad to see her standing there, full of hope and optimism day-by-day. I think it's a real testament to her personality that she's still so upbeat and full of charisma!
Come and see Fala today, she's the one with the big personality!

Havanna (14881687) Staff Member: Jenny, Adoption Counselor
Havanna has been here since December - far too long! Whenever I have time, I like to go in to his kennel and just spend some time with this funny fellow. This guy loves human companionship! Often, he'll shake his paw in my direction and roll over, indicating "Jenny, it's time for belly rubs now!"
As if that beautiful face and winning personality doesn't "sell" him enough, as an Adoption Counselor I've been doing my darndest to find him his forever home. As with so many here at the shelter, we just can't understand why everyone keeps passing up this lovely boy.
If you're looking for an intelligent, affectionate and devoted companion, you couldn't ask for a better dog!

Maxine (14516140) Staff Member: Dr Karen, THS Veterinarian
Maxine is a charming older girl. She arrived as a stray dog to the Toronto Animal Services. Her right hind leg was broken after an altercation with a vehicle. TAS transferred her to the THS so that she could receive the care that she required. Maxine is a wonderful cooperative patient, and bore her surgery and post-operative treatment with stoic good grace.
Maxine has a definite personality and quickly became a clinic staff favourite.
As befits her senior status Maxine knows her own mind. She won't hesitate to call for your attention when there is a matter she wishes attended to. She is a delightful clean girl who never voids indoors and is a dainty eater. The technicians say she loves the outdoors and walks like a beauty queen on leash.
While we have enjoyed Maxine's company and are inspired by her bravery, it is now time for her to relax in a loving home. She deserves to be napping in the sun on a soft bed instead of spending her days in the medical clinic.
Please ask to see Maxine; we are sure you will be a charmed by her as we have been. She is ready for her second chance at life.

Wolfy (14109088) Staff Member: Eugene, Intake Department
Wolfy arrived at our shelter in late September, after spending the first seven years of his life with his family, he suddenly found himself without a home. I remember trying to make friends with him on his first day, but with such a drastic change in environment, Wolfy had little interest in meeting new people.
Since then Wolfy has come a long way, I visit him in the cat communal regularly, he seems happy to see a familiar face. This kitty's needs are simple, a new home, a bucket of catnip and a best friend for life. If you would like to meet Wolfy, come visit him a The Toronto Humane Society. You can find him lounging in the VIP area, also known as the cat communal. Have a seat on one of our comfy couches and tell him about your day, he's a great listener, provided some serious petting is involved.
P.S. Wolfy is a great poet. Here is a snippet of his work:
Roses are Red,
Violets are Blue,
My name is Wolfy,
Come to The Toronto Humane Society and adopt me RIGHT NOW!!!!

Layla (14940461) Staff Member: Tess, Canine Adoption Counselor
Why does everyone keep passing up this amazing dog? Layla is full of life and has so much love to give! This girl sees her human friends as perpetual playmates, and she'll keep prancing around, enjoying your company as long as you'll indulge her. Layla may be a small town girl, but she's ready for the bright lights and exciting city life, and just can't wait to find that special someone who will enjoy it with her and show her all that the world has to offer.
When she first came in, I was sure such a beautiful, friendly gal would get snatched up right away, but one by one, the days have passed her by and she's been here almost a month and a half and that's way too long! I think Layla is just fantastic.

Newman (13447040) Staff Member: Heidi, Feline Adoption Team Lead
To be honest, Newman was a cat I passed over time and time again when I would stroll through the adoption rooms. I've had my 'favourites' come and go and not once did I really get to know Newman.
One day, Newman's gorgeous soulful eyes followed me as I walked around the room and I decided it was time I got to know him. Of course, I had been missing out all this time! Newman, or "Mr. Handsome Pants" as it says on his picture, is such an amazing young cat. His endearing personality and demeanour shows he is wise beyond his years. His depression is evident, and his personality is dampened by life spent in a cage. I've seen what can become of a cat who has given up hope, and Newman is losing his.
This sensitive guy has stolen my heart. When I visit him in the cage he is always calm, loving and enjoys my company. For his young age, he is very relaxed and quiet. He is the perfect cat. He is a cat that will sit still beside you when you are curled up on the couch, he will comfort you when you are sad and he will be the cat that will be your loving companion for always.
I try to steer potential adopters to this perfect cat, but before the words "FIV positive" can leave my lips they've made up their mind that he isn't the cat for them. The only one who has been hurt by the virus is Newman, but he doesn't think any less of himself for it so why should you?
I don't want Newman to fade into the background and go unnoticed any longer. It is time that special someone sees Newman for just how unique he is and give him his much deserved second chance at happiness. Won't you give a cat like Newman a reason to feel proud and wanted?

Happy (14878667) Staff Member: Jen, Lead Hand Shelter Worker
Behind this little dog named Happy is a sad story. Sadly, 11 year-old Happy the toy poodle was surrendered just before Christmas due to the declined health of her owner. Upon arrival at the THS, she was quivering with the stress of being in a strange and loud environment away from her family. Happy was anything but happy and we wanted to sing "Don't worry, be Happy." She trembled for days but slowly grew to know a few THS staff.
Soon her anxiety subsided, and she started to enjoy her walks. Happy can now be seen zooming around in her little red and orange Hot-Rod flames doggie coat!
Normally very quiet, Happy is sometimes so excited about her walks that she can be heard crying out in joy as she starts down the hallway towards the dog park. She recently received a haircut and it has been revealed that she sports 2 very large YODA-like ears! Happy just had several masses removed during her spay surgery and is pining to recover in a quiet retirement home. Would you consider adopting Happy? She is sure to add a little sunshine in your life!

George (12935353) Staff Member: Catherine Anne, CFO
The first day I met George he was in recovery as he had been a very sick young boy when he arrived at THS. He had escaped from a volunteer and was running circles around her as she was trying to get him back into his cage. I stopped in to help and discovered that he was very much recovered from his sickness and was a treat monster. I planted a line of treats along the floor which he followed right into my lap. I picked him up and he began to purr and it was instant love.
Orange tabbies have one of the best personalities and George is no different. He is sweet and charming and loves to play. He has the perfect "M" tabby mark on his forehead and the black freckles on his nose and mouth. He is so handsome and is only 3 years old. Although George is FIV positive, he will live a long life and give his new people years of love, affection and love.

Browley (13050703) Staff Member: Megan, THS Veterinary Technician
Browley has been living in a cage since May - that's way too long! He had some pretty common medical issues when he first arrived - ear mites, dental tartar - but as we later discovered, he was also suffering from diabetes mellitus, which is now well controlled with insulin. The medical staff (and especially technicians) get to know our resident diabetics very well, and you couldn't ask for a better patient than Browley.
Although he was very afraid of living in a cage when he first came to the shelter, he's since turned into a super-social, easy-going guy. He always greets you at the front of his cage with a chirp and a twirl, and sits patiently through his treatments, waiting for some cuddle time. But there is never enough time to give Browley all the attention he deserves - for that; he needs a family of his own. Come see how irresistible his tomcat jowls are to squish and scratch, and you will surely find him as lovable as all the technicians at THS do.

Buddy (13932598) Staff Member: Krista, Special Species Administrator
Buddy is an absolutely adorable rabbit. He's a cute little Himalayan who has completely stolen my heart. When I first met Buddy, he was under medical treatment for a neurological problem and overgrown teeth. After plenty of TLC from our veterinary team, he has recovered nicely, though he is blind in his left eye and has no front teeth.
This definitely doesn't get him down; he remains a happy, curious little fellow who loves human companionship and will always come over to greet me. He can eat just like any other rabbit, I just have to tear his greens into teeny pieces to help him out. I love to feed him nibbles of banana, and he munches them toothlessly right off my fingers. He is such a sweetie pie and I am so excited for whoever gets to take him home. I visit him every day and he never fails to make me giggle.
If you're interested in taking this fabulous furry friend into your home, come down to meet him! I will be happy to tell you all about him!

Sparky (13684059) Staff Member: Tess, Canine Adoption Counselor
Sparky is one misunderstood boy. Just past puppyhood, he has been in the shelter for too many of his important developmental months.
Although he can be overexcited at times, he settles down quickly when given a bit of direction from someone whom he trusts. When I have the time to go visit Sparky, he will immediately come forward and nuzzle up against me, giving kisses and sometimes even lying down for a nice belly rub.
This special Beagle deserves to be loved, and he can't wait until the day that he can finally kick his feet up and feel secure in a special home to call his own.
Won't you give Sparky the second chance that he deserves? He'll be sure to reward you with years of happiness!

Lucky (14100099) Staff Member: Kimberly, Special Species Adoption Counselor
When entering the Special Species rooms, Lucky definitely stands out. He is the handsome white rabbit who always runs up to greet any new visitors. Lucky is definitely a distinctive young man, and the quintessential white rabbit. In fact, he bears a startling resemblance to the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, especially when racing happily around his pen with the excitement of getting some human attention. Despite his youthful energy, Lucky is never too busy for love and his inner peace and calm always come through, making him seem a very wise rabbit indeed.
Other than his striking looks and beautiful ruby eyes, Lucky's most notable initial feature is his desire for human attention and his excitement at seeing any new human friend. In fact, he is much more interested in people than in his own species, and, unlike the vast majority of rabbits, would do well as an only-rabbit in a home with LOTS of attention. Lucky is also the only rabbit more interested in people than food. When offered fruit and vegetable treats he puts his head down for pets instead. Lucky is always happy to see Special Species staff and volunteers and, after" binkying" around his pen a few times, always lays his head down in anticipation of pets and cuddles. This is when the true beauty of his white fur emerges. Anyone who has had the pleasure of petting Lucky can tell you that, as a Rex-breed rabbit, Lucky has the softest fur in the department: Just like velvet!
Lucky was the first rabbit I had the pleasure of getting to know when I joined the department, and ever since our initial meeting, he seems to remember our first cuddle session and always jumps up to see me when I come in the room. This boy is truly beautiful both inside and out, and I cannot believe he has not found his forever home yet! Lucky deserves to know the care and stability of a family and will return all the love you can give him and more! Nothing would make me happier than to see Lucky in the perfect home. If you think this wonderful boy is the one for you, please come and speak to me. Please help make Lucky's name a reality for him. You won't regret a single day with this loving bun!

Bill (13855311) Staff Member: Cathy, Canine Behaviour Department
Ode to Bill
I've known Bill for quite a while
And I must admit I like his style
He isn't a teddy-bear type of pooch
Who's always seeking a pat or smooch.
The way to Bill's heart is through his belly
Give him a treat and he turns to jelly
He is true beagle from head to toes
Where his nose points, so his bod goes.
Life's been hard and has taken its toll
But Bill carries on with a playful soul
He's just happy for a roll in the grass
Or a sidewalk stroll with a lad or lass.
Will you take Bill in all his Billness?
Though good times and hard times, perhaps even illness?
We're waiting for you, with your patience and skill,
To be a lifelong friend for our special boy Bill...

Diego (13889564) Staff Member: Jenny, Canine Adoption Counselor
The first time I met Diego was when I joined him in his kennel just to say hello and he immediately proceeded to snuggle into me as much as he could, almost to the point of knocking me over! Clearly this sweet old boy is just after some good old fashioned love and companionship.
Diego and I love going for walks together where he can sniff to his hearts content - He's certainly a curious fellow, and always seems to be interested in the goings on of the area. Diego often gets overlooked by potential adopters because of his age, but this beautiful boy's still got a lot of life in him yet, and really just wants the chance to be someone's loyal companion.
Diego is one of our longest stays - he's been here at the THS since August - and not knowing a lot about his history, we can only assume he's been bounced from shelter to shelter most of his life. I can't wait for the day when someone will take the time to get to know him, as I'm sure they'll fall in love just as I have!

Mini (12976674) Staff Member: Mitchel, Feline Adoption Counselor, Victoria Park
This is my little "Mini Wheat", as I like to call her. She was returned to the Toronto Humane Society after three and a half years when a family member moved in and had allergies. Every morning Mini is the first to greet me when I walk through the doors at Victoria Park. She will start talking to me until I open her door and pick her up.
Mini has a very warm and affectionate personality and loves to be carried around while I do my duties, my little helper. Mini also loves heights and will find the highest perch in the room to stretch out and sleep. She has lived with a dog in the past and gets along with cats.
Come and visit Mini at Victoria Park!

Suzie (12815358) Staff Member: Jenny, Feline Adoption Counselor
Suzie is a cat that has become very special to me at the shelter. She arrived in April 2011 when her owner surrendered her because she wasn't adjusting well to a newborn baby. Everyday I watch people adopting cats and Suzie is always overlooked. She tends to sit at the back of her cage, quiet as a mouse, and this makes it difficult for people to see how wonderful she truly is.
Suzie is a very shy and nervous girl but this certainly doesn't mean she isn't very sweet and affectionate. Once Suzie gets to know you she will call out to you from her cage and literally throw herself into your hands and drool and purr with happiness while being pet and brushed. Suzie craves attention but the hectic shelter environment isn't the best place for a sensitive soul like her.
If you have a quiet and stable home, without young children or other animals, Suzie would love to meet you. With a little extra time and TLC Suzie is going to make someone an extremely loving and devoted companion for many years to come.

Zoe (13353814) Staff Member: Dale, IT Systems Administrator
I will be honest, I wasn't sure which animal to pick for this Staff Pick campaign. Seeing as I have a cat and 2 guinea pigs at home already, it was natural for me to choose a kitty. After asking co-workers from the feline department where I should begin my search, I was told to go visit Zoe downstairs in the Communal Cat Room.
It didn't take long for me to see why Zoe was a perfect pick for me. Out of all the cats in the room, Zoe was the first cat to come and investigate who this large breaded man was coming into her space. Right away I noticed her black and white colouring, and her spare tire looking belly (just like me!) She was extremely friendly and easy to approach. She was vocal and playful and seemed to really enjoy all the usual cat play toys.
I think Zoe would be a great fit for many different types of homes and I hope she finds her fur-ever home soon :)

Chloe (11948121) Staff Member: Nicki, Animal Shelter Worker
Chloe is the GREATEST CAT EVER!! She is looking for a wonderful person that she can adopt and hold paws with forever. She has been through a lot, having been in the shelter since Feb. 1/11, and having briefly being adopted then returned in the spring she is anxiously awaiting her person in shining armour to rescue her!
Chloe is deaf, but that doesn't stop her! She loves to cuddle and watch TV, especially the bird channel. If purring was a sport, Chloe would win the gold medal for multi-tone, RPM, squeaking and motor-like purrs (even while she's sleeping!). Tricks are also something she loves to do. Hold a treat in front of her and she will roll over and give a paw! She loves to cuddle up at sleep time, and makes sure you don't go anywhere by holding on to your hand with her paw.
Aside from all of her loving and friendly qualities, she is a gorgeous cat with epic features including her striking green eyes and the pretty flame-points on her ears. She gets very excited when she sees her favourite people walk by her cage and she 'quacks' right at them to get their attention.
Chloe is looking for a wonderful, loving home with no other pets (her personality takes up a whole house!). Loudness can be an issue due to her deafness, so she would need to be adopted into a house with no adjoining residences. She loves to be with people and would make the perfect house cat for someone living or working at home.
I personally love her VERY much and I have seen how attached she can get to one person...maybe that forever person will be you! Be Chloe's new best friend and speak to one of our amazing adoption agents for more info today!

Bill & Hilary (11274881 & 11274922)
Staff Member: Krista, Special Species Administrator
Bill and Hilary are two of the friendliest rabbits I have ever met. When I first met them, I was a little unsure of them, I had never seen such big rabbits! But I soon found that they are the St. Bernards of the rabbit world - true gentle giants. You can often find them grooming and licking each other and cuddling ever so sweetly, and they are always happy to have people join in on their cuddle parties too - which I often do! They are always looking for attention in hopes of having their head stroked or maybe getting some fresh snacks.
Bill and Hilary are often overlooked because they are large rabbits and they must be adopted out together. Rabbit pairs are always harder to find homes for, which is unfortunate because rabbits are much happier and healthier in pairs. They experience less stress and have stronger immune systems, and as a result tend to live longer than single animals.
These two will make excellent pets. They are litter-trained and after some initial house training, they will be able to hop around your house just like a cat or dog. If you want to meet them for yourselves, come on in and prepare to fall in love.

Chase, Bandit & Elvis (1304726/1304789/1304796)
Staff Member: Kimberly, Special Species Adoption Counselor
Seeing Chase, Bandit and Elvis, my first thought was: triplets! They are physically impossible to tell apart. Even though these guys are indistinguishable in appearance, as I got to know them, their distinct personalities came through. One is a bit more nervous, and draws comfort from his brothers. Another is more adventurous and is the first to explore new things. The third is the comforter, providing kisses to the others when they are nervous or startled.
My next thought was: how old are these guys? A three-way bond is so rare and very difficult to create. When rabbits go through puberty and get spayed or neutered, the bond they had with their siblings can often break because of their surging hormones. But these guys are neutered and 6 months old (generally the end of puberty and personality changes) and their love for one another persists! They will hop off on their own once in a while, but will always stay within sight of one another and, when startled, will group together and groom each other for comfort. A three-way bunny groom is probably the cutest sight there is! When they flop out in happiness, there is rarely an inch to spare between them.
These guys captured my heart. But my heart also broke a bit, because I know how hard it is to find a home for a bonded pair, let alone a trio. I initially observed them in the hopes of finding one that was less attached to the others and could be adopted out solo. Alas! They are bonded solid and the love between them is so complete and beautiful, that they can never be separated. These guys need one another, but they also need a home that can give them the stability and human love and attention they need. If you can open your heart and home to these three musketeers, they will reward you with the gentle joy and cuteness only triplets like these can offer.

Kenya (11963475) Staff Member: Megan, Foster Department
She sits patiently at the Communal Cat Room door, staring through the glass, watching the busy THS lobby fill with people and animals as day unfolds. Her big emerald eyes take in the commotion and I often wonder what she thinks, as she sits there.
Kenya is a 6 year old female cat who was brought to the THS after the death of her owner. Naturally she began her stay here as a traumatized and anxious animal, but she was quickly taken under the wing of our feline behaviourist who placed her in a quiet room where she could unwind and receive some extra TLC. Since those first few days Kenya has blossomed into a curious and gentle feline who loves to have her head stroked and chin rubbed. She greets me at the door every morning when I arrive for work and we say our good byes every evening when I leave. One day soon I'd like to arrive at work and not see her sitting looking through the glass. She is a wonderful cat who deserves a stable and quiet home full of love and affection where she can live out the rest of her life sitting in her own window, safe and secure in the knowledge that she is wanted.
Kenya the curvy black feline waits patiently for you at the Communal Cat Room door.

Ranmaru (13759991) Staff Member: Tess, Canine Adoption Counselor
When I first met Ranmaru, I wasn't sure what to think. He was putting on quite the show in his cage at first, baring his teeth to ensure that no one would come too close. As I got to know him a bit better, I started to realize that underneath it all, he has an amazing personality and had just never been given a chance to let everyone know what a fantastic dog he can be, given the opportunity. Maroo has been here a bit longer than the other dogs because he is patiently waiting for the perfect home, one where he will be understood and accepted for who he is. Please don't let his intimidation tactics scare you off - he's just waiting for that special someone who will finally understand that his bark is much worse than his bite.

Katka (12868753)
Staff Member: Jenny, Feline Adoption Counselor
Katka first arrived at the Toronto Humane Society in 2003 as a scared and malnourished kitten. She was nursed back to health and soon after adopted to a new home. Eight years later, in April 2011, Katka came through our doors again when her owner could no longer care for her. Needless to say Katka has spent far too many of her days in a cage at the shelter! I have had a lot of time to spend with Katka and she is by far one of the most charming cats I have ever met.
She is chatty and affectionate and absolutely beautiful. She loves to curl up in your lap and shows you her appreciation with a big steady purr. She has also enjoyed the company of a dog in the past so may do well in a home with a canine companion but she is not so fond of other cats. If you think you can give Katka a second chance at truly forever home please come and meet her for yourself. Surely, she will steal your heart.

Patsy (14223268) Staff Member: Rochelle, Fundraising Coordinator
The first time I saw Patsy I couldn't believe my eyes; how did someone let this cat become so overweight! Another thing that struck me was the enthusiasm and speed at which this big girl moved. That's right, she's no couch potato! Even with her sizeable girth, she was enjoying an adventure around the office, running from one room to another, all the while chatting away and saying hello to everyone along the way. It was quickly obvious to me how special this girl is; every time I visit her, she greets me with the warmest welcome and wastes no time in snuggling up for some loving. Patsy truly has an amazing personality and is without a doubt one of the friendliest cuddle bugs at the THS.
Patsy really needs to find a loving home urgently; she deserves to start a new chapter where she has a chance to slim down and live a happy, healthy and long life.
Please come to the THS and stop in for a visit with this friendly gal. A few minutes with Patsy may be all you need to decide to adopt this beauty. Whoever adopts Patsy will be rewarded for years to come for she has an endless supply of love and gratitude to give to her lucky new companion(s).

Muffin (13821825)
Staff Member: Vicky, THS Veterinary Technician Lead
Muffin arrived at our doorstep in August. He had a broken pelvis and conjunctivitis in both eyes. After three months of cage rest and two eye surgeries, he is finally ready to find his new forever home.
Muffin was a very brave man. Follow-up eye treatments three times a day wasn't very fun. But he knew we were helping him. But he turned his treatments into purr time.
He has the most awesome jowls - you just want to hug him. He loves every minute of attention he can get. He truly is a lap cat and he is waiting for you to love.

Peekaboo (13546933)
Staff Member: Makayla, THS Veterinary Technician
Peekaboo came to us as an angry little kitten waaaay back in July. Because we were unsure whether or not he could be socialized enough to find him a conventional home we ended up ear tipping him during his neuter surgery. This is when the tip of the left ear is removed under anesthetic in order to easily identify a feral cat that has been sterilized.
But... Our Peekaboo has made a huge turn around after spending time at THS with the staff and volunteers. His ear tip is now just a reminder of a wild and rambunctious past. While loud noises and sudden movements may still give him a bit of fright, a cuddle and soft words will have Peekaboo purring up a storm.
If you have a warm lap, a quiet home, and some time to spare then Peekaboo is the cat for you. Be his guardian angel and show him the world isn't as scary as he imagines.

Bobert (13462900) Staff Member: Liz, Feline Adoption Counselor
Bobert has been at THS since June. He's a super friendly dude whose favourite pastime is sitting on the window ledge looking for insects and watching birds fly by. He is always gentle, always affectionate and always loving.
Problem is he doesn't know how to promote himself and is often sitting in his box, covered from view, by potential adopters. Also, he has FIV which can sound scary but in reality is really very manageable. I think cats with medical issues are often the most appreciative of finding a forever home and as a result, are especially loving.
P.S. I'm the proud parent of Sir Oliver, another FIV cat from THS. I'd be happy to give you the lowdown on adopting one of our FIV cats who are all special in their own way.

Chloe (12967422)
Staff Member: Heidi, Feline Adoption Counselor
Itsy bitsy Chloe has built up a tough exterior as a result of her unstable past and has learned to adapt to her surroundings protecting herself from future heartbreak. This little girl, with her big funny looking fangs, is very special to me because I can see past her hardy outer layers and I know that deep down all she craves is for someone to love and for her to feel safe enough to love them back.
She can be choosey when allowing people to get close to her, but I never let that keep me away. When I go into her cage softly speaking to her and stroking her under her chin, she throws back her petite head, stretches out her teeny tiny paws and takes it all in while purring away happily. For just that brief moment she lets her guard down and opens herself up to affection and happiness. When it is time to walk away and close the cage she sinks deeply back into the safety of her basket hoping her disappointment and sadness will go unnoticed.
As the public browse through the adoption rooms looking for that special feline companion to call their own, they often walk past Chloe's cage not noticing her eyes peeking out from her basket. She doesn't reach out to you, she doesn't rub up against the bars and she doesn't call to you as if she is surrendering to her fate of life in a cage. All she needs is that incredible person who would just stop to appreciate Chloe for the special cat she is, and see she is a cat in desperate need for a miracle. A person with the determination and a big heart to slowly chip away at her tough outer shell and show her what it is like to be loved unconditionally. Until then, Chloe will be waiting, safely tucked away in her little basket.

Trina (12188135)
Staff Member: Mitch, Victoria Park Adoption Counselor
"My girl" that's what I call Trina. Every morning when I open the door Trina is the first girl who shines her emerald green eyes my way. Trina is a girl that likes being the only cat. I always let her out first for some one on one time. Belly rubs, ears and chin scratches, she will sit on her favorite rug and purr up a storm while brushing her.
Trina was returned to our shelter after 2 years because her owner became ill. Come to Vic Park and let me introduce you to My Girl.

Sushi (12686308)
Staff Member: Eugene, Intake Department
Sushi is one of the longest residents at the THS. He has been waiting patiently for his forever home, ever since his transfer from another shelter. Sushi loves to play "hard to get". Despite my pleas, he assures me his perfect owner is just around the corner.
If your hobbies include taking five naps per day, gorging on scrumptious food and keeping your neighbors in line, Sushi may very well be your soul mate. His long, fluffy, black and white hair, combined with his spunky personality makes him one of my favourite cats at the shelter.
Come and visit Sushi at The Toronto Humane Society. You can find him lounging around on the first floor, in the cat communal room with his fellow felines. I'd be happy to chat with you about this spunky kitty.

Mrs. Blue (12831799)
Staff Member: Sara, Feline Behaviour Specialist
Mrs. Blue was brought here through a partnership with Toronto Animal Services and has been waiting for a forever home ever since April. Mrs. Blue is at the fun young age of 1 where she still has the playfulness of a kitten but the maturity of an adult. In her cage she's often frustrated and can quickly become over stimulated with too much handling, which may throw off potential adopters.
Having had the pleasure of spending time with Mrs. Blue loose in a room, it's unfortunate that others couldn't experience just how affectionate she can be when she's not confined to a cage. Once all of her energy is burned off with a few laps around the room using a laser pointer or wand toy, Mrs. Blue is thrilled to take a short nap beside you and sometimes she's even content with snoozing on your lap.
Mrs. Blue would make a great companion for somebody who's willing to give her a little time to become comfortable in her new home so she can show off her fun, spunky personality.

Bella (11284708)
Staff Member: Lynn, Call Center
Let me introduce you to Bella. She is a 9yr. old declawed older lady that will melt your heart when you see her. I have spent some time with Bella and have discovered some awesome things about her.
When you walk up to her cage, she looks at you with those big beautiful eyes and gives you a big stretch and begins to talk. She sure likes to talk!
When sitting beside her, she will roll over and want her chin and belly rubbed. All the while she is talking to you, telling you how good that feels!
When you rest your hand on the bottom of the cage she will come over and give you cat kisses, either on your fingers or your arm.
She will be the perfect forever companion that will meet you at the door after a tiring day at work, will snuggle up to you on the couch and tell you all about her day while you tell her all about yours.
Bella sure has stolen my heart!
