Avian Program

The Avian Program is a new addition to the animal services provided by The Toronto Humane Society. The Avian Program helps rehabilitate birds in need of medical treatment or socialize birds if they are going to be adjusting to a home environment. Once the bird is ready for adoption it is made available to the public. All available birds can be viewed on the Bird Adoption page or, in certain cases, in the Animals with Special Needs section of our website.
Why do you want a bird?
Birds can be wonderful pets and can bring years of enjoyment into a home. However, being the guardian of a bird takes no less responsibility than being the guardian of a dog or a cat. Birds are intelligent, amazing animals that deserve a long, healthy, happy life. A bird guardian should always consider the proper diet, living conditions and medical treatment for their bird.

Jiha Humayan
(Aviculturist and Small Domestic Coordinator)
Jiha has been working at The Toronto Humane Society since 2003. She has always been interested in birds and she has a few of her own. Jiha recently started working with birds as an Aviculturist. “Most of the time people adopt birds because of their beautiful and attractive colours and the adorable sounds they make but forget to find out the information on how to take proper care of them.” Jiha tries to make sure that she has enough information available for new adoptive parents so they know what to expect and how to take care of their new pet when they take their little bird home.
