In July, 2006, The Toronto Humane Society Rescue Investigators were contacted by police who had earlier been called in to investigate a smell coming from an apartment unit. Neighbours in the apartment building were concerned that someone had, in fact, died in the unit and that the smell was caused by a decomposing body.
A wellness check was undertaken by the police and they eventually gained access into the apartment. They quickly discovered that there was no decaying body inside but that the place was in such a state of disarray and uncleanliness, with dishes, bottles of beer and opened food strewn everywhere, that it became obvious that the smell was a result of the general decay of the contents of the unit itself.
Also, the police found a Lhasa Apso dog in the apartment whose fur was matted and whose claws had grown to such a length that they had started to bend back underneath and grow into the dog's footpads—a sure sign the dog didn't get many walks which would have ensured the claws were kept worn down.
Our investigators took custody of the dog due to the extreme conditions it was living in and the physical condition of the dog itself. He is at our shelter now and we have groomed him and he is doing fine, waiting for a new home.
