Dog and four cats found living in extreme conditions

Volunteers and THS investigators team up to help cats

Dog and four cats found living in extreme conditions

On July 8, 2006, the THS Investigations department was given a tip by one of the shelter volunteers about a possible case of neglect in an apartment building. The volunteer had heard that there were reports of smells coming from the unit and that the place seemed to be infested with cockroaches.

After visiting the unit and being allowed entry, our investigators discovered that the apartment was so dirty and strewn with garbage that police officers present actually refused to enter, saying that it can be classed as “a bio hazard unit” and that they weren’t equipped to enter.

The THS investigators, however, did enter the apartment and discovered that there were four cats living among the garbage. They found, to their horror, cockroaches scuttling everywhere, including even the bath tub and pans left on the stove in the kitchen.

A dog has been rescued and the investigator is still trying to coax the terrified cats from the gabage; we are giving them food and water at the apartment. The person living at the address was giving up occupancy within a few days and when our inspectors returned they also discovered three dead kittens there. The live cats were hiding amongst the garbage, so humane traps have been set in an attempt to capture them and bring them to the shelter for medical treatment, if needed, and cleaning.

Below are some pictures taken by our investigators at the scene. Click on the thumbnail images for a larger view.
