THS Raids East-End Cat House

The Toronto Humane Society raided a storefront, apparently selling cats, and removed more than 30 cats from what was an unsafe and unhygienic environment. The storefront is known as “Ferals First Taming Centre” and “Felines First” at 763 Woodbine Ave in the east end of the city.

The THS began investigating the operation several months ago after members of the public alerted the Society to unsafe conditions, including overcrowding, insufficient food and water and an alarming number of clearly ill cats. After several visits to the location, a THS Cruelty Investigation Agent, after seeing two dead cats and one with green nasal discharge, issued an order demanding that the shelter owner provide immediate veterinary care for the animals in her charge. When that order did not appear to be fulfilled, the THS, under the direction of a staff veterinarian, had no choice but to seize the animals and take them to the safety of the THS shelter.

In the course of the investigation it became apparent that some of the alleged ferals may in fact be locally owned cats who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. At least two of the cats seized in the raid are wearing collars and many of them appear well socialized. If you live in the area and have recently lost a cat, the THS encourages you to contact us.

The removed ferals are getting the best possible treatment at the Society. They are doing well at the shelter and it appears that they will all recover. Ferals will eventually be returned to their colonies under THS supervision.
