Rescued cats living among corpses and skeletonsInvestigators shocked at inhumane conditions
The Toronto Humane Society was faced with a hellish scene February 1 when THS investigators rescued approximately 20 feral and semi-feral cats from a home at Davenport and Weston Rd. When they entered the home they discovered at least four complete cat carcasses and more than a dozen partial corpses. “They were everywhere,” says THS investigator Tre Smith. “Under the bathtub, in the vents, on the floor, in cupboards. Just everywhere.” In addition to the obvious bodies, there are signs that more cats were buried in the dirt-floored basement.
The stench of decay was overpowering and the THS workers had to don bio-suits and ventilated masks as they sought out the remaining, living cats. In all they removed 19 cats, 11 of which appear healthy enough to go into the adoption stream once a THS vet gives them a clean bill of health.
The Society hopes members of the community will help it to find new homes for these rescued cats and will also come out in large numbers to adopt any of the more than 130 cats in the THS adoption system right now.
Toronto Humane Society president Tim Trow wonders what we, society in general, can better do to make sure this sort cat-hell never happens again: “The THS has a pet-food food bank, we spay or neuter ferals, we offer assistance to shelters and rescues, yet this keeps happening. No level of government will pass laws that are adequate to protect animals.”
Question: How can we – both the Toronto Humane Society and members of the general public – prevent these sorts of tragedies? What do you think should be done to improve the health, safety and security of cats in Toronto?

This is pure evil. It is comparable to denying food and medical attention to a baby. All animals are innocent and when domesticated, need us for survival. The THS does not mention in this article whether this house was abandoned. If the house was occupied, the tenants' names should be made public for all to see. This is the kind of evil inhumane injustice that has me thinking twice about the way we all think we are so advanced. Technologically, maybe. But certainly not emotionally, spiritually. What makes us think that animals deserve any less than we do? We are all animals, and they were here first. We should hold the utmost respect for the remaining creatures we have left on this earth. It even amazes me that we have any at all. We are able to produce hatred and evil. We'll even kill an old lady for the 5$ in her wallet. Animals are natural and free of discrimination and hate. They deserve respect. Levels of government will have to get their acts together. But let's not forget that the government isn't posing any action because there aren't enough people pushing for it. Don't just say: "Yeah it's true" and go on to do something else. Write to your MP. your MPP your mayor, the PM and anyone who could really make a difference. It starts with one person. We should encourage others to do the same. Shame on the government. It portrays us all too well, doesn't it?

I think that people who live and / or allow their animals to live in conditions like this are not well themselves and must also need help. I was so shocked to see these pictures! How did this tragedy happen in the first place? Do these cats even belong to anyone? If there is an owner to these cats he is plain cruel. Animals are like human beings, they too feel pain as well as happiness, and its cruel of people to treat them like dolls or material things. Animals are like disabled people who are mute and cant talk to us, but it doesnt mean they dont have feelings. If these cats were humans instead, there would be a big outrage about this by everyone, even by PMs and government, but we just cannot see beyond the "disability" of animals.

NO ANIMAL SHOULD BE FORCED TO LIVE IN THESE "CONDITIONS". IT IS NOT FIT FOR HUMANS,AND IT SHOULDN'T BE FIT FOR ANIMALS AS WELL. THESE CONDITIONS ARE SIMPLY APPALLING!!! HOPEFULLY THESE PICTURES WILL GET ENOUGH PEOPLE TO VOICE THEIR OPINIONS AND FIGHT FOR THE ANIMALS RIGHTS WHO DESERVE TO LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE THEY ARE FREE FROM STARVATION AND TORTURE FROM HUMANS!!

Their fate should be the same as the way they treated those poor, poor, innocent souls. Our beloved pets can not speak or fend for themselves...the government needs to have laws that defend those who can't defend themselves.

There had to be someone at some point who had been in contact with this cat hell......my question is WHY DID IT TAKE SOOOOO LONG FOR SOMEONE TO BLOW THE WHISLTE!!!!!

I can not believe the way that people treat their "pets". I am the proud maid to 6 cats, one of whom started off as a foster from THS, and who is now a permanent member of our family. I feel guilty when I forget or get too busy to clean their litter boxes every day and maybe get to them after two days. This is just disgusting. PLEASE - consider fostering an animal needs to know that there ARE good people in the world! The animals that have been rescued, and I mean that word in every sense you can possibly imagine, need our love and tenderness... to know that the majority of the people in this city and province are NOT like this. I'm all for fostering one of these little beautiful animals again, and so, of course, that will put me up to 7.
As for the people that owned that house, I say track down the owners, renters, whatever through the town and charge them with cruelty to animals causing death, for every single count and every single set of remains that was found. They should rot - just the way they made these poor, sweet, helpless animals do.

This is horrible and shocking, its hard to believe people would do something like this and I agree with most of the comments before mine. I wouldn't believe it if the house was actually lived-in, if the house was abandoned, they should have given the animals up to THS before they deserted the place. I think this is happening far to much in the world, humans seriously need to remember these animals came before us and now they depend on us - all animals - because we're destorying the world and their fate is in our irresponsible hands. We all need to slow down and work on the ever-growing problems before we should even consider any more "advances" in our society. They are all only going to come back and bite us in the rump sooner or later.

If you can not take care of yourself do not even consider getting an animal, if this was human remains would it be rightous to say "oh well these two old men may lack the ability to care for themself" does it make it ok? Not in my opinion, a life is a life weither it be human or animal.

I put this down to the lack of concern on behalf of the government. We try and get tougher laws passed for animal abusers and instead they rehash laws that are already in place but a small group of people still protest. Well those small groups should put their minds to animal abuse instead of oh my gays can marry, or oh my a girl is going to have an abortion we need to stop her, or should there be smoking in cars where there are young children. The fact of the matter is that gays are not hurting people, the girl who cannot afford to support her unborn child as she is still in school, comes from a poor family and has been abandoned by the boyfriend or smoking in cars ENOUGH ALREADY - get a law passed that all pet owners must have their animal spayed or neutered, have tougher abuse laws because we are hearing more and more abuse but it is falling on deaf ears in the government! When election time comes that is one of the important issues I want to see addressed and I will elect the person who intends to get tougher abuse laws passed, who states passes a law that all animals need to be spayed or neutered unless you are breeding them!

This message is directed towards JUDY. Judy, althoughI do agree with most of what you wrote, I feel as though that last line in the paragraph could represent a huge problem if not addressed properly. Breeders can only be breeders if they are registered with the CKC. We can't just have Tom Dick and Harry walk in saying they're breeders and give them rights. Breeders too have to be well maintained, observed and investigated often. Even the most notable breeders from respected organizations have been caught with neglect and even abuse. We have to be careful with that. Not everyone should be allowed to breed an animal just because they feel like it.

My comment is directed to the Toronto Humane Society. Obviously, those visiting your website love animals and are concerned about their welfare; I can't think of any other reason.
As such, your posting the graphic images obtained during this past raid is insensitive and sensationalizes the incident to those already upset. Reading the article provides all the information needed to paint this horrible picture, without subjecting those who truly care to deeply disturbing pictures. Your warning doesn't cover it either. I can't think of one good reason to post these pictures and it gives the THS site a tacky, tabloid feel. Send them to your MP and MPP with the signatures you obtain by organizing an on online petition demanding stiffer laws and harsh sentences for cruelty to animals. Demand that cruelty to animals be treated like hate crimes. I'll go further. I was at the THS a few weeks ago and was told that no volunteers were needed; how about recruiting volunteers who have the ability to set up an on-line lobbying campaign with the aim of eliminating cruelty to animals in Canada. Think outside the box, there are many folks out here who are willing to help in non-traditional ways. Sadly, I don't think the THS will ever be put out of business but it could help reduce the insane number of animals dumped on yours and so many other shelters due to peoples' lack of commitment and/or negligence.

While the pictures were horrifying and perhaps they should not be posted without some sort of better warning, I am afraid that most people need the shock treatment to make them realize the severity of the situation. I am sure that the THS (unfortunately) is aware of what needs and should be done.
The conditions were atrocious and yes, there should be stiffer laws to deal with persons who commit cruelty to animals. But clearly the people who lived in this house (if anyone did actually live in it) are not of sound mind. And the real underlying issue is how that many cats can be gathered in the first place. The stray and feral cat situation is a disgrace, people - please spade or neuter your pets! If you cannot afford to do that then you should not be adopting a pet. The shelters are great for fixing the animals that come to them - but what about the thousands of pet stores that give away free kittens with start kits? Pet stores should have the same sort of policy as the shleters - mandatory fixing of their animals. Proper Breeders go through all sorts of required certifications and are regulated by their respective organizations so I don't believe they are the problem. It is the general public who are responsible - we need to step up and take more control of the situation.

I agree with Shauna to an extent. Some of us (it looks more like most of us) do need the shocking pictures for the reality of the problems to really sink in. What I don't agree with is that any normal level-headed human being should be allowed and able to have a pet, regardless of how much income they make. There are more people living below the poverty line than there are people who earn a modest living. Maybe some of the problems with animal neglect are related to this. Programs should be put into place that would allow low-income families to be able to care for their pet. And for those of us who earn a little more than the national average, we ourselves cannot believe the rates at veterinary clinics and we're barely able to afford it. It would only be fair to people and animals alike to put a program into place that would allow people to properly take care of their pets including having them spayed and neuteured which should cost a lot less than it already does ($300 and up is the average)The price is ridiculous and if vets really cared about animals and the overpopulation problems they would charge a lot less to get the spay/neuter issue out of the way!

It's now very clear to me that while a forum like this can be a real catalyst for change, its only purpose has been to provide an arena for the self-righteous to pat themselves on the back. Way to go for disagreeing with animal cruelty. Congratulations!

My heart is full of sadness when I see such horrific cruelty. I pray for ANYTHING like this to never happen again.

In response to E - as brutal as the photos are, they need to be seen to get the message through to people. This horrific treatment of animals has to stop and if it gets regular people talking, it's a start. If it gets people looking around and reporting this kind of treatment all the better! But the courts have to be merciless against those that perpetrate this and [mario] if they are not capable of looking after themselves then shey should not have been inflicting their lifestyle on defenseless animals. The judge should still throw the book at them!!! shameful!!!

This is an act of pure evil. If someone so sick can do this to an innocent animal there is NO DOUBT in my mind that they could do this to a human. I am extremely disgusted and I am trying so hard to hold back the tears. Why didin't anyone report this before? Didin't the neighbours know? I find this an act of murder. If I knew anyone who was cruel to their animals I would report them asap. I know it would be hard to take in animals but if I found one hurt I wouldin't even think twice about taking the little one in with me. Animals are so smart, understanding and will love you unconditionally they don't deserve this and I speak for any animal owner when I say NO animal or human could do anything so bad to deserve the type of life that is shown in those photos.

I am crying just thinking about it... I shouldn't have looked, it's going to give me nightmares. How could anyone do this? Animals are people too... I could go on and on, but it's already been covered. Please, oh, please, let the stupidity of the human race end! I would try to do something, but being only a preteen, I'm not sure what to do... I can spread the message, but not much else. Help me! It isn't fair to them!
And "mario": what do you expect??? Don't tell us an old man can't pick up the phone to call an SPCA! Besides, some cats were found BURIED IN THE BASEMENT!! If a pair of old men can't take care of these cats, they certainly can't bury them! How do you know that the house belonged to two old men anyway? Were you involved in this cruelty in some way? If you were, telling us will hurt you less than holding it in will!
Please, someone, anyone, just lend a hand. Working together, we can repair our uncivilized and barbaric existence and move on to a happier, more peaceful life! Love and laughter are the keys, the building blocks, the staples in our lives! THS and the other animal-related societies out there have made the first glorious step. Help me make the second.

This is the works of a truely evil monster. How could anyone treat sweet inocent animals in such a barbaric manner? When you have a pet you have taken full responsibility to feed and love them for their entire lives. They give us so much and ask so little in return. If for some reason you are unable to care for them, call someone and give them to someone who will. There is no excuse for this kind of cruelty, or any cruelty for that matter.

I feel that anyone who can inflict this kind of inhumane treatment on any living creature deserves it themselves. Nothing will stop people like this because the government does not feel they are worth saving. If we don't place more value on the lives, well being and safety of our animals this situation will only continue to worsen no matter how hard we try to stop it, no matter how many supporters their are. We would never allow this kind of treatment towards any human being and likewise it should not be permitted towards animals. Laws against animal cruelty need to be made harsher, their needs to be lengthy jail terms and when an individual is told they are banned from owning animals ever again SOMEONE needs to follow up to see that it is being enforced. I am just so infurriated I'm at aloss.

Fortunately the "law" recognizes OUR pain and suffering and abuse from evil people in society--UNFORTUNATELY, the "law" DOES NOT recognize companion animals as anything else but a piece of "dead wood"! The courts are powerless to help, because there are NO LAWS that put any value on animal pain and suffering and abuse!! The Gov't Dept for animal welfare (the Dept of Food and Agriculture,Monty Quinter, who stated on TV that he has no plans to change the current laws)needs to hear our voices loud and clear, and be forced to have some changes made!! If you do nothing--nothings done!!! Send him your emails, or write TODAY!! If there are LAWS to recognize the value of companion animals, then maybe the perps will have something to fear!! Right now, an animal is seen in the eyes of the LAW as just a piece of "dead wood" with absolutely no value whatsoever!!!Shameful!!We wouldn't cry over pictures of "dead wood"!! Do something today!! The THS should also start a Petition list! They've known about this for YEARS !! It's about time we all "DEMAND" CHANGES BE MADE! I commend you Katelyn. It's nice to see that the younger generation feels strongly about this subject. I would recommend that you gather your classmates and form a letter writing campaign group to write letters to ministers, mayors and members of Parliament. Maybe this is something you can discuss with your teacher. If anyone reading this has younger kids at home, this is a way of getting them involved in something useful and progressive that could ultimately change the way we see the world.

This comment is in a way directed at the THS.........I know that overpopulation of cats/dogs is a big problem in this city, yet most of your adult cats are adopted out unaltered? There was a waiting list before to have the cat adopted spayed/neutered, which when my niece adopted, the waiting time was over 6 mos, then there was a rebate offered but is there anything available now? All it takes is one time for the cat to get outside and create more unwanted litters.
Anyone can check out Craiglist or Kijiji and see how many cats looking for homes are not fixed....there are even people posting want ads for "male" cat to mate with their female(mixed breeds) all because she is cute and friendly? What are people thinking? With all the homeless animals why are people still letting their cats roam free and purposely breeding them? The feral cat problem we are facing is because of irresponsible owners either letting their cats out or dumping them when no longer wanted. If you can't afford to keep a cat/pet for it's entire life time don't adopt, foster one from a rescue or shelter for short periods if you feel you need to have an animal in your home. And people when you are expecting a baby, that is no excuse to dump your pet...........it makes me sick.

For all the cat-lovers out there who allow your own cat to roam around outside of the home...the only people you have to blame for this horrible situation is yourselves! Don't you realize that the the reason these cats end up living in such situations is because you, ignorant people, do not believe in keeping youre own precious feline indoors! If everyone took responsibility for their own pets, Toronto would not be faced with this situation. First of all, cats are animals, and animals reproduce. The first step to preventing another devistating event is to spay/neuter your cat. Secondly, why in the world are these cats not indoors? Who let them to roam in the first place? If you love them so, keep them inside!Unfortunalty there are two groups of people out there who are responsible: Cat/pet abandoners...and there are only 3 words for you "shame on you". You have a pet, and you dont take care of it! What kind of person are you!! And the other group: The pet owners (cat lovers) who love their cats and feed them throughout the day...but let them wander OUTSIDE! Why? Keep them indoors! Keep them where they will both remain, and not envoke harm on anyother animal in the wild...chipmunks and birds...you know they have feelings too! And i hate to say this, but why is Toronto continuing to encourage and nurse feral cats communities? They should not be on the street! Either take them in, or do away with them, and clean up the city! Keep these pests away form the GTA's little natural environments and let these native species prosper, rather than letting thier numbers diminish and protecting pest cats!

You can't say "I love my kitty" then turn around and say "keep these pests away from the GTA's little natural environments..." It comes as a complete surprise to me that animals are adopted out from the Toronto Humane Society without having been spayed or neutered. In the past, part of the adoption agreement required that new owners agree to having their pets spayed or neutered and the Society followed up to make sure that it happened. There is no excuse whatsoever for having a six month wait in order to have this procedure done. A lot of puppies and kittens can be born in that time. Is the Toronto Humane Society no longer committed to stopping the overpopulation of companion animals?

This comment is for Tara: Of course the THS is committed to controlling animal populations. We'd love to spay and neuter every animal that leaves our shelter, but the reality is that due to a combination of circumstances including the large number of animals that pass through The Toronto Humane Society and the often complex nature of emergency medical situations in the clinic, our vets simply can't get to every animal. And to be quite honest, the true responsibility lies with the person who adopts the animal.
