Celebrate Halloween at THS! |
|
| |
|
Get a dose of spooky and sweet at this weekend’s Halloween Block Party, Saturday, Oct. 29 & Sunday, Oct. 30. Visit us at 11 River Street between noon and 5 pm to enjoy live music, a variety of refreshments, raffles, face-painting and amazing entertainment like a wandering circus stilt walker.
As part of this spooky-themed fundraiser, the shelter will be decorated in spine-tingling style - including costumed staff - with visitors encouraged to wear costumes as well. (Saturday will also feature mystery hosts!)
Frighteningly delicious grub will include a BBQ with hamburgers (including veggie), hotdogs and sausage with all proceeds benefiting the THS. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate and desserts will be served as well. During this time, guests will also be able to tour the facility and of course adopt a forever animal companion!
Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Trap Neuter Return program receives award! |
|
| |
|
We are proud to report that the Toronto Humane Society has received the 2011 Summit Urban Animal Strategies award in the category of "Community Compliance" for its Trap Neuter Return (TNR) program.
The award recognizes the work of the TNR program in offering a community service of free feral spay/neuter clinics and building overwintering shelters for colony caretakers. To date, we have held 21 spay/neuter clinics and sterilized nearly 600 cats!
TNR is a volunteer-run program that is staffed by volunteers from the Toronto Feral Cat Coalition, which includes the Toronto Humane Society, Toronto Animal Services, Toronto Feral Cat Project, Animal Alliance of Canada, Toronto Cat Rescue, Annex Cat Rescue, Action Volunteers for Animals, Representing Animals in Need (R.A.I.N.), Urban Cat Rescue and the OSPCA.
A big congratulation goes out to the Toronto Humane Society and its TNR team; keep up the great work!

Thank you Abby Stewart! |
|

|
It’s been a year since Abby Stewart and her family adopted dog Panda from our shelter, a sweet black and white 10-year-old border collie mix. But in addition to being an amazing companion, Abby, 9-years-old, says Panda inspired her to continue contributing to the plight of homeless animals.
Recently, Abby encouraged some friends to start a lemonade stand and fundraise for charity. While she admits at first she wasn’t sure what cause to support, one day Panda came running out just as she was discussing the topic with her friends. "We couldn’t think of a charity and then we saw the dog come out and me and my friends all looked at each other and thought: the Toronto Humane Society!"
Having always loved animals, especially dogs, rabbits and cats, Abby felt helping an animal shelter would be the perfect charity. "I love (animals); I like their fur and how soft they are and how kind they are. I also love taking dogs out for walks."
On behalf of the animals, we want to extend a big thank you to Abby and her friends for their generous donation!

Thank you Dave Martin! |
|
| |
|
It was an evening of good laughs for a good cause at the East End Comedy Revue show held earlier this month at the Dominion On Queen (500 Queen Street East).
Thanks to comedian Dave Martin, one of the organizers of this fantastic evening, part of the proceeds were donated to the THS. As a volunteer cat socializer, Dave is a caring animal lover who has held three benefit shows for the THS. But don’t worry if you missed out because another laugh fest is slated for Saturday, November 12 at 8 pm. For more information and/or to buy tickets, visit www.dominiononqueen.com.
Thanks again to Dave and the Dominion On Queen for hosting; the animals are so grateful for this contribution!

Keeping black cats safe during Halloween |
|
| |
|
As done in previous years, the THS will continue its prudent protocol of postponing black cat adoptions between and including the dates of Friday, October 28 and Monday, October 31. Those interested in adopting one of our black beauties can visit the shelter and fill out an application during this time but the kitties will remain at the shelter until November 1.
We’d also like to remind pet owners to keep cats indoors during this time. In addition to the perceived Halloween-related dangers, the increase in outdoor traffic and trick-or-treaters can create a frightening and unsafe environment for our feline friends.

Meet Trick-or-Treat Trina at Vic Park!
|
|
| |
|
Don’t forget to visit our festive kitties at Victoria Park this Halloween weekend (2802 Victoria Park Avenue).
You’ll get the chance to meet Trina (a.k.a. Trick-or-Treat Trina), a beautiful girl with an even more beautiful personality. She has a calm and gentle nature and loves being pet and massaged. In return for your affection Trina gives you a big steady purr. Affection is very important to Trina so it's been difficult for her in the shelter. She has many visitors but it doesn't replace the consistent love and security of a forever home. Trina would do well in a quieter, single cat home, with a single person, couple, or mature family.
Meet Tom, like his moniker - Count Tom, he’s smart, mysterious and a sheer thrill! This adorable three-year-old has lived with another cat and dogs in the past so he should have no problem adjusting to a multi-pet family. Overall, he is friendly, easy-going and playful.
The THS Victoria Park branch is located in the Van Horne Plaza on Victoria Park and Van Horne (a few blocks north of Sheppard Ave.). For more information call 416-392-2273.
