Sweet Cinnamon home at last

Some of you may remember Cinnamon, he is the five-year-old Dachshund who arrived at THS back in May with a slipped disk and in need of emergency back surgery. With the help of generous THS supporters, almost $2,000 was raised on her behalf, which went toward this lovable pooch's vital treatment and rehabilitation. A veterinarian specializing in neurology at the Veterinary Emergency Clinic (VEC) was able to remove the extruded disk material that was putting pressure on Cinnamon's spinal cord.

Now we are happy to report that Cinnamon had a successful and speedy recovery and was adopted just this month! On behalf of the THS, we want to wish Cinnamon and his new family the best of luck!

We're in need of dog leashes

Scratching Post readers have proven time and time again to be a generous and thoughtful bunch so we're counting on you once more to help us with donations. This time we're asking for dog leash donations. Any colour, brand and size is welcome, however, we cannot accept the extendable styles.

Due to the overwhelming support of our kind volunteers, we provide our shelter dogs with up to four walks a day! Our four-legged friends love the exercise and socialization – so they are looking forward to the new leashes! Thank you all in advance!

PJ's Pets Adoption Event this weekend!

You may have heard that PJ's Pets recently launched the "Every Pet Deserves A Home" Adoption Program. This program helps increase the visibility of pet adoption agencies within local communities by offering them space within their stores to educate people about participating organizations and the animals they have available for adoption.

As part of this program, Hill's Science Diet and PJ's Pets are hosting an adoption event at various stores in and around the GTA. The THS is happy to be a participant of this exciting initiative and will be taking part in the adoption event at the Yonge and Lawrence store (located at 3291 Yonge Street) in Toronto on Saturday, September 17, 10-3 pm and Sunday, September 18, 11-3 pm.

THS will be showcasing some of its kittens and bunnies during these two days. Be sure to stop by and meet your next furry little friend!

Roo Roo: our miracle kitty

If it's true that cats have nine lives, Roo Roo is down to eight! He fell from a fifth floor balcony and miraculously survived.

Due to the trauma, this delightful nine month old kitty fractured his left femur and his two upper canine teeth. A specialist surgeon pinned the fractured femur, but Roo Roo still has some lameness on this leg. Though his condition has improved substantially over the past few weeks, it is possible that Roo Roo will have some permanent lameness in this leg, and there could be arthritis in the knee joint as he gets older. This will have to be monitored by his future owner and could mean further surgery for Roo Roo if the pins migrate.

Roo Roo's fractured canine teeth were removed by a specialist veterinary dentist at Derry Road Animal Hospital and have healed well. However, his lower canines had to be shortened and should be X-rayed again in six months.

Though he's been through a lot and his activity should be restricted for some time (while he continues to heal), Roo Roo remains a sweet and playful cat. Come visit him today; he's sure to bring you luck too!
