Cruelty-law update lacks teeth
This topic was started on September 5, 2007

McGuinty government makes promises of stiffer penalties for animal abuse, more funding for investigations, but do so without adding the necessary legislation to make these changes effective. We believe clearer wording in the act is necessary. What is your opinion?

"It's because of animals like Cyrus that we need more teeth in our anti-cruelity laws. Because of the lack of backbone on Monte Kwinter's part the man who almost killed Cyrus could get this poor dog back.
When will the McGuinty Liberals get off of their asses and do something about updating these ineffcient and out-of-date animal cruelity laws?"

"So Mr. Trow is still stirring the public support pot, making the view murky again. This committment by the government is also supported by the opposition party - it is GOING TO HAPPEN. All parties are very well aware of the rise in public consciousness about animal protection issues. They can no longer place it on the back burner - we the people will simply not allow it any more.
Mr. Trow is fighting a personal power war with the OSPCA and using every incident to further it.
The OSPCA has been working tirelessly toward this turn of events. This is the culmination of many many hours of meetings and efforts by many many OSPCA people over many many years.

So there."

"If Kwinter's promise makes people happy then they don't really understand the extent of our problem, $100,000 plus $80,000 over 2 years is pathetic while the government spends billions on things we do not need. I have to agree with 1 comment made above by celeste it's time for the WORLD to get off their asses and realize animals have rights and it should not be up to humans to determine whether animals are worthy. Killing or assaulting a human being comes with huge jail sentences, fines, probation and criminal records but an animal is treated like they do not matter. It's time to change the laws and speak up for animals everywhere. As well it's time to hold the cosmetic companies accountable there are options outside of animal testing, maybe the world should know what goes on in these labs or maybe it's time to test on humans. The fur trade is disgusting. Actually the way animals worldwide are treated is mind blowing people actually think they are unimportant and it's time humans realize they are not god on this planet and they zero right to determine which species is deserving and which arent."

"I firmly believe that the government wastes more money on entertaining themselves and there friends, and allow things with substance to be given a lick and a promise.....Personally i am appalled that i pay the taxes to keep these liars in office when i would much rather we decide where our tax money goes....but the government will continue to make irresponsible decisions and think nothing of it...The societies we trust to protect our animals need the financial back up to do so, we give too much to useless needs or wants but the animals suffer because it takes money to allow these facilities to exist and run smoothly...Wake up Canada before its too late"

"Funny thing how it works in this city. Criminals get legal aide, pro bono work etc no matter what. All people are given a defence right? Not one of us can be charged or sentenced without it right? Why do animals not have the right to a lawyer or Paralegal? Do they not deserve protection? Children are protected by CAS. Animals need someone to speak up for them. Maybe its time i defended them instead of acting as agent for humanes. Because truthfully humans are really starting to disqust me"

"I really do believe that the majority of politicians in Canada are the biggest dumb-bells. Even with all their degrees, they come up with the most un-intelligent by-laws, which make no sense whatsoever. Try and contact one today, in your area, no matter what level of government you are talking about it will take a minimum of two months for them to get back to you, no matter what the original form of correspondence was -- whether it was an e-mail, fax or a mailed letter."

"We need a modernization of the anti-cruelty laws, and the main one being the legal jargon used. Right now, officials need to prove that they person(s) "intended" on harming the animal, which makes it almost impossible to press charges."
