DESCRIPTION:Little Sheldon the turtle has had quite the adventure. He has traveled far and wide to find his perfect home.  \n Turtles are long lived animals that require daily care and attention. They can live up to 50+ years and will require owners who are committed to keeping them happy and healthy. \n Adult Turtles need approximately 80-120 gallon aquariums per animal\, depending on the sex. This can be achieved with a large aquarium or a preformed pond\, depending on the location in the home.  \n A large external filter which should ideally turn the volume of the water over twice per hour is one of the essentials to have. UV light is extremely important for them as it mimics the sun\, which has an immediate effect on their natural behaviour\, skin and shell health and helps them absorb calcium into their bodies\, which we as caregivers add to their diets. Water temperature should be 72 to 76 degrees with a dry area and basking spot in the high 80’s. \n \n Proper research should be done before deciding if a turtle is the right fit for your home\, lifestyle and family. SUMMARY:Pet of the Week - Nahla
DESCRIPTION:Nahla is a scruffy little character known here at the shelter for her toothy smile and mischievous nature. She is a typical terrier\, brisk\, inquisitive and not afraid to speak her mind! She can be a bit watchful of new people and will occasionally sound the alarm when strangers enter her home area. Other dogs aren’t exempt from this treatment either. She’s a little more suspicious of them and tends to bark at those who get too close. Nahla is not the dog park sort and would much rather spend her time adventuring with her owner followed by a good cuddle. She is quite affectionate with those she knows and trusts and is a constant companion. In fact\, she can get a little over-attached. Nahla has had a lot of upheaval in her short life and has some difficulty seeing her owner leave. She tends to bark out her frustration or loneliness and would do best in a house where her habits won’t annoy the neighbours. Her previous owner does report calm behavior when left alone so this anxiety may be related to all the change. Hopefully it will dissipate with time and patience. For the most part she is good with sharing her food and toys; but some special bones might be too tempting to keep.   \n Nahla is a pretty special girl and she does have some special needs. She is currently being treated for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. This condition is very manageable with a special diet and enzyme supplementation; a regimen which will need to continue for her lifetime. Nahla does let it slow her down one bit\, though! She is a great girl looking for the home who will stand by her for the rest of her life.

DESCRIPTION:Meet Emma! She is a lovely girl who needs some time to warm up to people but once she does that tail doesn’t stop wagging. Emma loves to play with her toys and will carry her favorite stuffy in her mouth.  \n  She is currently available as a foster and the foster parent can choose to adopt her once she is given the clear by our veterinary team. Emma is up for foster instead of adoption because we are concerned about the way she walks. There may be a neurological issue or a problem with her spine. The foster parent will be responsible for bringing her in for her appointments\, providing basic care and reporting progress to our foster department.  \n \n  Emma would do best in an adult only home who has a house with yard because she tends to really miss her people when they leave so she can be vocal and sometimes destructive. Emma is a true sweetheart and would be a great addition to anyone’s household.

Your child or class can write letters to our long-stay animals\, giving them hope for the holidays. They can present their letter however they like – use coloured pens\, draw pictures\, decorate with stickers…however they feel best expresses their creativity! \nMail the letter/s or drop off at the shelter by Monday 28th November. \nOn Giving Tuesday (29th November) we will display the letters in the shelter alongside the animal’s name for visitors to admire. DESCRIPTION:Captain Pancake is here to save the day! She may not be able to fight crime\, but she can make you smile and laugh. After being found outside she is looking for a home with a patient caregiver who can help boost her confidence. Due to some recent health concerns it is important that adopters have a vet who is experienced working with rabbits and realistic expectations on future care and cost. Rabbits should have large enclosures and at least 4 hours of out of cage time every day to keep happy and healthy. Captain Pancake would also do well with a neutered male close to her age.

DESCRIPTION:Traveller (called Che by his current owners) is a handsome boy who is a sweet and loving dog. He can be a fearful and nervous dog so he will require an owner who will respect his space\, have patience and a good understanding of dog body language. Traveller would be ideally suited to an experienced owner who has the patience to continue to work with him. He would do best in a low traffic home and could do well living with other dogs. \n  Traveller is well trained\, very obedient and walks well on a leash. He gets along very well with most dogs and loves to play. In the proper low-traffic environment and with the right\, experienced owner\, Traveller’s uncertainties can be managed and he would make a fantastic companion and pet.
