Volunteering with the Toronto Humane Society

The Toronto Humane Society operates with the assistance of over 500 onsite volunteers who work in a variety of roles. These essential individuals assist our organization through activities such as dog walking, cat enrichment, kitten feeding, special species enrichment, administrative support, special events, fundraising and so much more.

In every capacity they serve, volunteers are a highly valued resource and our shelter truly relies on their dedication and hard work to operate.

Steps to Becoming a Volunteer

  1. Submit an Application

  2. Attend an Orientation Session
  3. Applicants will be selected to attend an orientation based on current vacancies in our volunteer program.

  4. The Interview
  5. After the orientation, Volunteer department staff will contact you and schedule an interview. During the interview we will discuss your application, your areas of interest and experience as well as answer any questions you may have.

  6. Training
  7. After the interview, successful candidates will be scheduled for training sessions. Training sessions occur during the week and on weekends to accommodate as many people as possible. Volunteers are provided with training specific to their role within the Toronto Humane Society. Required training includes both written and practical components. The training is required to ensure the safety of all of our volunteers and animals.

Please Note: We do receive a high volume of applications and are therefore only able to reply to applicants who meet our current volunteer needs. Volunteer applications are kept on file for three months. As new opportunities for volunteers always arise, applicants may re-apply three months after their initial submission.
