Get to Know HK: A Long-Stay Dog Ready for His Family

| May 29, 2026

HK has been with us longer than most dogs ever should be waiting for a home. At 6 years old, he’s still full of personality, curiosity, and affection—he’s just waiting for someone who understands him and is ready to give him the structure and love he thrives on.

We asked Animal Care Worker, Ethan Zatzman, a core member of his care team, to share what life with HK is really like.

What is HK like when people first meet him?

HK is a people dog at heart. Once he trusts you, he’s very eager to greet you on leash and be close to his humans. At first, he benefits from a slow, calm introduction so he can feel safe and understand you’re not a threat.

Once that trust is there, HK completely opens up. He’ll greet you with a big, toothy smile and a full-body wag. He’s incredibly reciprocal—if you offer affection, he gives it right back without hesitation.

How would you describe HK’s personality in a few words?

Enthusiastic, adventurous, and affectionate.

HK moves through the world with curiosity. On walks, he loves to stop and take in every scent, always checking back in with his handler for guidance and reassurance. There’s a real eagerness in him to do things “right” and connect with his person.

What are some of HK’s favourite things to do during the day?

Cuddling is at the top of the list. HK will happily bury his big head into your lap while being petted—this is where he’s the most content.

Food is another major motivator. HK is extremely food-driven and never meets a bowl he doesn’t want to finish immediately.

And when he’s done being active, HK is all about rest. He can settle in anywhere and is very good at making himself comfortable when it’s time to recharge.

What’s something goofy or funny HK does that always makes staff laugh?

HK has a very strong interest in accessible garbage cans. On some days, his curiosity gets the better of him and he’ll fully investigate them—sometimes even knocking them over in the process.

He knows he shouldn’t, and often ignores them… but occasionally, the temptation wins.

How does HK show affection toward the people he trusts?

HK doesn’t hold back.

When he’s comfortable, he becomes a full-on cuddle companion—tail wagging, body wiggly, rolling over for belly rubs with his tongue out and a relaxed, happy expression.

If you sit with him, he’ll stay with you. For HK, affection isn’t a moment—it’s something he wants to share for as long as you’ll give it.

What has it been like working with HK on his training and leash skills?

HK is very aware of his handler and responds best when walks are calm, structured, and consistent. He does well with a steady, confident presence and clear expectations.

He’s made meaningful progress in learning to disengage from triggers, including other dogs, and is actively trying to make better choices with support. He genuinely wants to do well and responds to guidance.

What motivates HK the most during training sessions?

Food—especially high-value treats—is HK’s number one motivator. He also responds really well to praise and vocal encouragement. A confident “good boy” goes a long way with him when paired with structure and rewards.

How has HK progressed since arriving into our care?

HK has grown in confidence and focus. One of his biggest achievements has been improving his ability to disengage from distractions on walks.

He’s learning to pause, refocus on his handler, and choose connection over impulse. That kind of progress takes time, and he’s putting in the effort every day.

What kind of environment helps HK feel the most comfortable and confident?

HK thrives one-on-one with his trusted people. Quiet spaces where he can focus—like a private room for training or downtime—help him feel grounded and secure.

Without too many distractions, HK is able to show his most relaxed, affectionate, and attentive self.

What should adopters know about living with a large dog like HK?

HK is a big, enthusiastic dog who sometimes forgets his size when he gets excited. That can mean jumping up or becoming a bit mouthy in moments of high energy.

He does best with calm, consistent boundaries. When he’s excited, the most helpful response is to stay steady, avoid reinforcing the behaviour, and wait for him to settle.

He’s a dog who benefits from clear structure and a confident, patient handler.

What type of home would be the best fit for HK?

HK would thrive with someone who enjoys both activity and downtime—a person with a balance of patience, consistency, and affection.

A home with space to stretch out, like a yard, would be a bonus, but what matters most is the relationship: someone who enjoys closeness, physical affection, and building trust over time.

HK needs a person who is committed, calm, and willing to guide him while also loving him deeply.

Why do you think HK would make such a special companion for the right family?

HK is all heart.

He loves hard, leans into his people, and brings a goofy, joyful energy to the room. He’s loyal, affectionate, and full of personality.

For the right person, HK won’t just be a dog—they’ll be a companion who shows up with love, enthusiasm, and a whole lot of cuddles, every single day.

Ready to Meet HK?

HK has been waiting patiently for someone to see him for who he is and give him the chance to finally meet his family. If you think that might be you, we’d love to help you get started.
