Yet, in navigating this journey together, we encourage donors contemplating significant gifts to consult with financial or legal advisors. We gratefully accept donations from all who wish to support our mission. However, it’s vital that each gift reflects our shared values: 

  • Aligned with Our Mission: Every gift must support our core objective – the welfare of animals. 
  • Responsible Stewardship: We evaluate each donation to ensure it benefits the animals without imposing undue administrative burdens. 
  • Guarding Our Integrity: We’re committed to maintaining the trust placed in us by ensuring donations do not negatively impact our reputation or values. 
  • Legal and Ethical Compliance: All gifts must uphold our charitable status and adhere to the highest standards of integrity. 

Special Gifts with Special Considerations

Some gifts require additional scrutiny due to their unique nature. This includes: 

  • Life Insurance: If you’re considering naming us as a beneficiary, we’re here to help ensure it’s set up correctly. 
  • Real Estate and Capital Assets: These gifts are reviewed to ensure they are in line with our mission and operational capabilities. 

Special Gifts with Extra Care: Tangible Personal Property

When it comes to gifts of tangible personal property, like artwork, equipment, pet food, pet supplies, or other valuable items, we follow guidelines to ensure everything is clear and fair, for both you and Toronto Humane Society. For non-cash gifts valued over $1,000, Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) advises that we determine a ‘Fair Market Value’ to properly acknowledge your generosity: 

  • For Gifts Over $1,000: We kindly ask that you arrange for a third-party evaluation or appraisal of the item. This helps us issue you an official tax receipt that accurately reflects your contribution. 
  • For Gifts Valued Over $500 But Less Than $1,000: We can issue tax receipts for these gifts as well, provided there’s documentation proving their Fair Market Value. It’s a step that ensures your donation is recognized in line with its worth. 
  • For Gifts Under $500: These gifts are special to us, no matter the size. If you can provide proof of their Fair Market Value, they may still be eligible for a tax receipt upon special request. 

This process ensures that your generosity is acknowledged appropriately and that we remain in compliance with tax regulations. It also guarantees that your donation makes the most significant impact possible, helping us continue our mission to care for and protect animals in need.
