Aldean
Hi, I'm Aldean! I'm an excitable and energetic young boy who loves making new friends with people and dogs!
Although I love making friends, before coming to the Toronto Humane Society, I didn't have a chance to learn how to remain calm during social interactions and when outside on the leash. I like to show my enthusiasm by jumping up on my hind legs when meeting new friends; but am learning how to remain calm for these types of interactions.
I can sometimes startle easily when outside and go into flight mode; so my handlers have me wearing an easy walk harness with two points of contact so that I am safe because the harness prevents me from wiggling out of my collar and making a run for it!
I love treats and learn well with food as a motivator! My handlers have me working on my handler focus, calm behaviours, and leash skills. I am a fast learner, and thanks to my handlers' patience and redirection using treats (I can sit for treats!), I am already improving.
I arrived to the shelter positive for heartworm and I am being treated for the condition until July 2022. Due to my heartworm status, I am in the foster-to-adopt program. This means that I can be interviewed for adoption but the shelter would retain ownership of me and provide the medication and treatment for the duration of my heartworm treatment.
Because of my heartworm condition and to avoid further medical complications, I need to be in a home with an environment where I will not become overstimulated so that I can rest and get better! For the time being, my walks need to be short and my play time needs to be calm and limited. Besides my temporary heartworm limitations, I also need a home where my family will be happy to continue my training and will be patient with me while I learn.
