Fun Giving Tuesday Activities for Kids and Adults!

Giving Tuesday, which takes place on November 28^th 2017, is described as the ‘opening day of the Giving Season’. It’s a time for Canadians to come together and support their communities.

It is also a day for us to kick off our Hope for the Holidays campaign here at the shelter! Our Hope for the Holidays campaign raises funds and awareness for the animals in our shelter, especially those who have been with us for a long a time and who we want to be in a loving, forever home in time for the holiday season!

We’ve got a whole bunch of fun ways for you to get involved and help homeless pets at our shelter, so please read on!

Pen Pals for Pets

Last year on Giving Tuesday we piloted our Pen Pals for Pets program to give kids a way to give back to the pets in our care. We received over 100 pen pal letters for our pets that gave them hope for the holidays. They loved it so much that we decided to do it again this year!

Pen Pals for Pets can be done as an individual or class activity, and is an opportunity for kids to spread hope and joy to some of our longer stay furry friends this holiday season.

Here is how it works:

2. By Wednesday, November 15th, we will email you a letter writing kit that will include the following: holiday letter templates and prompts, and profiles of some of our longer stay pets who are looking for a home!
3. Choose a pen pal to write to (or more than one!), and write them a nice letter to give them hope for the holidays. Tell them what their new home might be like, or what activities their family might do with them over the holidays! Feel free to get creative with drawings, poems, stickers and whatever else you think might make our pets feel extra special!
4. Mail or drop off your letters by Monday, November 27th.
5. On Giving Tuesday we will display the pen pal letters in the shelter alongside each pet’s name for visitors to admire. The letters will remain on display for the rest of the holiday season.
6. Follow us on social media because we will be creating a short video featuring a handful of pen pal letters that we will read to our pets, and yours could be one! Here’s our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages!
7. Feel great that you made a pet in need feel special and loved this holiday season! Our aim for this activity is to foster compassion for animals among young people, and bring awareness to the animals who have been looking for a home for a long time.

PawItForward Donation Drive

Bring the spirit of giving to your workplace on Giving Tuesday! Why not host a donation drive for the animals?

Bring a box and ask your colleagues to bring an item in to donate. You can use our Hope For the Holidays poster to let everyone know about your donation drive. Download our poster, type in the details, and print/email it to your coworkers to get everyone involved. We are always looking for:

• Gently used blankets and towels
• Toys
• Food and treats
• Collars and leashes
• Beds
• Coats and boots
