We are proud to support thousands of animals in need every year. Crucial to this success is our foster program. Juvenile, sick, injured, or animals with behaviour challenges make up a significant portion of the animals who come into our care. These animals often do better in a temporary home with Foster Parents, rather than in the frequently busy, shelter environment. Animals belonging to those experiencing temporary crisis which impacts their ability to care for their pet are also in-need of foster care. When you become a Foster Parent, you become an integral part of our organization and Improve the Lives of Animals every day.
We provide all Foster Parents with the food, medications, supplies, veterinary and/or training attention that the animal(s) require.Â
If you are interested in becoming a foster parent with Toronto Humane Society, please complete this Foster Parent Interest Form and Volunteer Services will reach out and send a Foster Parent Application form when we have openings available.Â
We are always in need of Foster Parents who can foster large and/or TLC dogs, animals enrolled in the Urgent Care program, and special species (smaller species like Rabbits, Guinee Pigs etc. TLC dogs are dogs that require some extra tender, love and care. TLC dogs may be experiencing some fearfulness or anxiety that may need extra attention and care to manage. Foster parents of TLC dogs will receive extra support through handouts and from the Foster Department and Training Team.
These special hearts need compassionate souls who can provide a safe and nurturing environment, helping them overcome their unique challenges. Your patience and understanding can transform their lives, making a lasting impact.Â
Due to high volume of interest, please do not contact us to inquire about the status of your application
Once the Foster Parent application is accepted, new Foster Parents will be invited to attend a mandatory virtual Volunteer Orientation – these are about 2 hours in length and offered frequently through out the year. During the session you will learn more about Toronto Humane Society and the role of a volunteer.Â
Prospective Foster Parents will be required to complete online training modules covering both the foster program in its entirety, as well as the care requirements of specific animal species/ages. At end of training you will have the opportunity to speak with one of our foster specialists prior to their first experience. Asking questions is encouraged!
Once these modules have been completed you will have officially become a Toronto Humane Society Foster Parent!
Toronto Humane Society’s Foster Department alerts Foster Parents of pets that need to be fostered through an online dashboard. Should you be interested in an animal in need of foster care simply reach out to the Foster Department indicating your interest and availability. Foster Agents will discuss the case with you prior to approving the foster to ensure that your home is the right fit.
