A Year of Resilience: Reflections from the CEO

| December 31, 2024

Dear Supporters and Donors,

As we approach the end of this year, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey we’ve shared. 2024 has been a year filled with both challenges and triumphs—a true testament to our collective resilience. The concept of resilience, at its core, is about the ability to recover, to adapt, and to press forward in the face of adversity. This year, more than ever, we’ve witnessed that spirit of resilience within our organization, our community, and the animals we work tirelessly to support.

From economic uncertainty to the increasing demand for animal welfare services, the obstacles we faced were numerous. One significant challenge came towards the end of the year when the postal strike halted our direct mail campaigns at a crucial time—the time of year when we receive the majority of donations that sustain our work. In past years, this would have been devastating. But thanks to our incredible supporters, we pulled through. Donations came through our phone lines, online platforms, and even in-person. Your commitment to our cause helped us weather this storm, ensuring that the animals relying on us continued to receive the care they needed.

Resilience in Action: Our Community of Care

Our ability to persevere was made possible by the unwavering support of our community. Whether through donations, volunteer hours, foster homes, or advocacy, you stood by our side every step of the way.

This year, our public programs grew significantly. Due to increasing demand, we began hosting two Community Days each month instead of one—an initiative entirely supported by donations from our community.

Together, we also helped many animals find their loving homes, provided accessible veterinary care through our Public Veterinary Services, and supported families through the Urgent Care program.

None of this would have been possible without you. Your resilience—your dedication to the animals and their welfare—was the cornerstone of everything we accomplished this year.

Looking Ahead: Strength Through Resilience

As we move into the new year, we carry with us the lessons of 2024—the importance of flexibility, the power of community, and the strength found in perseverance. We’ve come out of this year stronger than ever, ready to face whatever comes next, because we’ve seen firsthand what we can accomplish together.

In 2025, we will continue to push boundaries, expand our programs, and find innovative ways to support the animals and families that need us most. We will continue to be a pillar of hope, healing, and advocacy in the community. And above all, we will continue to show resilience—just as we have throughout this remarkable year.

On behalf of the entire team at Toronto Humane Society, I want to thank you again for your generosity, your passion, and your belief in our mission. The impact we’ve made in 2024 is because of you, and we look forward to continuing this important work with you by our side in 2025.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being a part of this journey. Here’s to a brighter, more compassionate future.

Warm regards,

Phil Nichols, RVT, CAWA

P.S. The government announced earlier this week that all donations received up to February 28, 2025 will be eligible for 2024 tax returns, so if you’re reading this message after New Year’s Day, it’s not too late to receive 2024 tax benefits.
