Keeping Pets Safe on Balconies

| October 28, 2026

If you live in a condo or apartment, your balcony may be a space you use regularly. Balcony safety for pets is worth thinking about if you share your home with a dog or cat. A few thoughtful precautions around balcony access can help reduce the risk of falls, escapes, and other injuries.

For cats, the safest option is to keep them indoors rather than give them access to a balcony. Cats can climb, fit through small openings, and move quickly, increasing the risk of falls or escapes. Falls from elevated spaces can cause serious injuries, even when a pet appears unharmed at first. A secure window perch can offer a safer way to watch what is happening outside.

Take a Look Around First

For dogs who spend time on the balcony, start by looking for gaps in railings, loose or damaged barriers, and items such as a chair or planter positioned close to the edge. Check that any balcony plants are non-toxic for pets. Make sure doors and barriers close securely. If you are considering a pet-proof barrier or balcony netting, choose a secure option appropriate for your pet and check with your building before installing it.

Supervise your pet whenever they have access to the balcony. Pay attention to where they climb, what they can reach, and whether there are openings you may have missed.

Think About the Weather Too

Direct sunlight can make the space warmer than expected, while rain can make surfaces slippery. Consider the temperature, wind, available shade, and overall conditions before heading outside. Keep fresh water available and make sure your pet can return indoors when needed.

Make Safety Checks Part of the Routine

Balcony safety for pets doesn’t stop with the first check. After moving patio furniture or adding seasonal items, review the space before your pet uses it again. Keep the balcony off-limits if a risk cannot be addressed. If your pet falls, seek veterinary care as soon as possible, even if they appear unharmed.
