Back in February, our Volunteer Services inbox received a message that instantly brought a smile to our faces. It came from a determined and passionate 9-year-old named Scotty. In his email, Scotty asked if we could make an exception to our minimum volunteer age requirement of 16 years old—he was eager to help animals in any way he could. 

Unfortunately, we couldn’t bend the rules. But Nathan Schwartz, Volunteer Services Coordinator, offered Scotty the next best thing: a personal tour of our facility. Without hesitation, he accepted. A few days later, he arrived at Toronto Humane Society with his mom, full of excitement and curiosity. 

It didn’t take long to see just how deep Scotty’s love for animals ran. His eyes lit up as he met the many animals in our care, and when Nathan asked him what his favourite animal was, he didn’t skip a beat: “Dogs!” he said, without a moment’s hesitation. 

Then came the part that left Nathan speechless. 

Scotty told him that not only does he love dogs—he also walks them. In fact, he started his own dog walking business in his neighbhourhood—at just 8-years-old! And if that wasn’t impressive enough, he asked if he could start a monthly donation to Toronto Humane Society using a portion of the money he earns walking dogs. 

That’s right. This 9-year-old entrepreneur is donating his hard-earned money to help animals in need. 

Scotty’s kindness, compassion, and sense of community has blown us away. He may not be old enough to volunteer (yet!), but he’s already making a real impact—and reminding us all that you’re never too young to make a difference. 

Scotty, you are a true inspiration and a Humane Champion in every sense. We cannot wait for the day you turn 16 and can officially join our volunteer team. Until then, thank you for being such a bright light in our world—and for being a hero for animals.
