FAQs

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a simple and flexible way to support the charities and causes you care about. A DAF is a fund held within a public foundation, where all contributions are dedicated to future charitable giving. You can contribute to your DAF and receive a charitable tax receipt from your DAF provider, such as a bank, then recommend grants from the fund’s balance to eligible charities when ready.

DAFs make charitable giving convenient by allowing you to plan and manage your donations in one place. You can recommend grants to organizations like Toronto Humane Society whenever you’re ready, making it easy to support the causes that matter most to you.

Donor-Advised Funds can be set up through banks, investment firms, community foundations, or online platforms like Canada Helps, GiveWise, and Charitable Impact. A quick search, or a conversation with your financial advisor, can help you find a provider that fits your goals and makes giving simple.

Yes, most online platforms and many DAF providers allow you to set up recurring gifts from your DAF. Check with your DAF provider or platform to find out how to set up a recurring gift. If needed, ask your financial advisor to help find the giving frequency that best fits your situation.

Yes. You can recommend a grant from your Donor–Advised Fund to Toronto Humane Society in honour or memory of a loved one, friend, colleague, or pet. Please include the name of the person or pet you wish to recognize as well as the contact information of their friends or family members if you would like us to send them an acknowledgement. The name will then be shared on our Tribute pages in an upcoming publication.

Yes. If there’s a specific Toronto Humane Society program or service – such as our Companion Animal Temporary Care program – that you would you like to support, please include the program’s name in your gift details. If you have specific questions about a program or use of funds, email grants@torontohumanesociety.com or call (647) 256 5330.

A charitable tax receipt is issued by the DAF provider or platform when you first deposit funds into your DAF account. This means you get the receipt as soon as you commit the funds to be used for charitable donations. Charities like Toronto Humane Society do not then issue receipts for grants recommended through DAFs. If you made a gift through a DAF and need a receipt, please contact your DAF provider.

Processing times vary depending on the DAF provider. Most Canadian DAF providers process grants within approximately 2–10 business days, although processing times may be longer during the peak holiday giving season. If your gift is time-sensitive, we recommend contacting your DAF provider directly to confirm the expected delivery date.

Once we have confirmed receipt of funds, we will send a letter of acknowledgement to the contact information provided. If you have a preference for how you’d like to be recognized or acknowledged, please include that information with your grant recommendation or send an email to grants@torontohumanesociety.com.

Employer matching policies vary by company and matching program. Some employers may match donations made through a Donor-Advised Fund, while others may not. We recommend checking with your employer’s matching gift program to confirm whether DAF grants are eligible for a match.

Yes. You can choose to recommend a grant anonymously. When submitting your grant recommendation through your DAF provider, select the option to remain anonymous or indicate that you do not wish to share your name or contact information. Most DAF providers will let you choose to provide your contact information only to Toronto Humane Society, and not publicly, which will allow us to reach out to you with updates on the impact of your gift. Or you can choose not to provide contact information at all.

If you don’t see Toronto Humane Society listed, try searching for our legal name, The Toronto Humane Society, or our charitable registration number, 11925 9513 RR 0001. If you still can’t find us, please contact your DAF provider directly for assistance. You can also reach out to us at grants@torontohumanesociety.com and we’ll be happy to help

Yes. You can contribute appreciated securities, such as publicly traded stocks or mutual funds, to your Donor-Advised Fund and then recommend a grant to Toronto Humane Society. The tax benefits and eligible securities may vary depending on your DAF provider and individual circumstances. Please consult your DAF provider or financial advisor for guidance on making a contribution of appreciated securities.

Generally, no. DAF grants are intended to support charitable purposes and cannot typically be used to purchase tickets, memberships, goods, or other benefits. If you would like to attend a Toronto Humane Society event or receive a membership or other benefit, please make that payment separately from your DAF.

This depends on your DAF provider and the type of account you have. Some DAFs allow you to name additional authorized individuals, such as family members or advisors, who may recommend grants on your behalf. Check with your DAF provider to learn who is authorized to make grant recommendations from your account.

Donors who make gifts through DAFs are recognized individually with letters of acknowledgement and may be publicly recognized as a Toronto Humane Society supporter. If you have a preference for how you’d like to be recognized or acknowledged, please include that information with your grant recommendation or send an email to grants@torontohumanesociety.com. Our team will try our best to support you and thank you appropriately for your kindness and generosity.

This email should include your name, your DAF provider, the grant amount, the date the grant was recommended, and any preferences related to acknowledgement and recognition.
