Celebrating the Backbone of Our Work: Pet Parent and Support Staff

| September 19, 2025

Every day at Toronto Humane Society, dedicated individuals bring their skills, compassion, and energy to support animals and their families. From behind-the-scenes roles to front-line care, these teams strengthen the human-animal bond and help create a community where pets—and the people who love them—can thrive.

This month, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible staff who make our mission possible:

Adoption Team

Our Adoption Team connects pets with loving homes. They carefully match animals to families, guide adopters through the process, and ensure every placement has the best chance for a happy life. Thanks to their work, hundreds of pets find safe, loving homes each year.

Animal Intake Team

Often the first point of contact for pets arriving at our shelter, the Intake Team welcomes each animal with care and compassion. Whether comforting a scared stray or supporting a family through a difficult surrender, they ensure every pet starts their journey with dignity—and every guardian is met with empathy.

Foster Care Team

From newborn kittens needing round-the-clock bottle feeding to dogs recovering from surgery, our Foster Team connects pets with temporary homes where they can heal, grow, and learn. They provide guidance and support to foster families every step of the way, helping pets thrive while awaiting adoption.

Urgent Care Team

Life can be unpredictable. When families need short-term help caring for their pets, our Urgent Care Team provides temporary shelter and support, helping animals stay safe until they can return to their families. Their work helps keep pets and people together through challenging times.

Pet Parent Support Network

Our Pet Parent Support Network is a lifeline for families navigating challenges. From training and behaviour guidance to connecting families with resources—or simply lending a compassionate ear—this team empowers pet parents to keep their animals safe, healthy, and loved.

Retail and Pet Food Bank Team

Accessibility is key to keeping pets with their families. By providing essential supplies and nutritious food, our Retail and Pet Food Bank Team reduces barriers to care, helps prevent animals from entering shelters, and strengthens the human-animal bond across our community.

Client Service Agents at Public Veterinary Services

Behind every appointment at our public veterinary clinic is our Client Services Team. They answer questions, schedule visits, and support clients through potentially stressful experiences. Their patience, empathy, and professionalism make essential veterinary care more accessible to everyone.

Together, They Make Our Mission Possible

Every department plays a vital role in helping pets and their families. To all our staff who show up day after day with dedication and compassion: thank you. Your work makes a difference not only for the animals in our care, but for the people who love them.
