In June 2020, we shared our response to the Black Lives Matter movement. We made a commitment, a promise, to ourselves and to our community, to advocate for change. However, before we could advocate for such change, the change had to happen within our own organization first.
In July 2020, Toronto Humane Society launched a formal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Program. After multiple conversations with stakeholders and extensive research, a formal Six-Phase Program was launched. This program aims to ensure that our stakeholders feel valued, supported, included, and heard.
Phase 1 of the formal Six-Phase Program was finalized in October 2020 and resulted in the creation of a Strategic Imperative.
Phase 2 of the program, the Current-State Assessment, was completed in March 2021. This step provided clarity around where Toronto Humane Society stands today, what Toronto Humane Society’s stakeholders’ perspectives are regarding DEI and, what the possible benchmarks for the DEI program could be. The process led to the creation of the Current-State Assessment Summary.
With our foundational research now complete, Phase 3 – Creating a DEI Strategy has begun. Toronto Humane Society will be working on this phase collaboratively with our stakeholders to ensure that our workplace and environment is more inclusive, diverse, and welcoming moving forward.
Toronto Humane Society’s DEI journey is an honest, transparent dialogue. Please reach out to us at dei@torontohumanesociety.com to share your thoughts or ask questions.
