Honouring the Pets We Have Lost

| August 26, 2022

The death of a pet, whether furry, feathered, or scaley, is heartbreaking. Our pets  become a part of our family and a familiar part of our lives.

No matter when you lost your beloved companion, their memory is surely still alive. The experience of losing a pet is excruciating but knowing they’re in a better place across the rainbow bridge can help bring a sense of comfort. While observing Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day on August 28th, here is a list of ways you can celebrate the joy and love your pet brought to you.

Share Your Story

Talk to friends, family members, or anyone who knew and cherished your companion animal. Many find that simply talking about their pet and sharing happy stories helps to cope with grief.

You can also submit your story to happytails@torontohumanesociety.com and your story will be shared on our social media platforms for other pet parents and members of our animal loving community to share your memory with.

Send an In-Memory Gift

Honour the memory of your beloved pet by making a donation to support other pets in need. In-memory gifts offer a special and meaningful way to recognize and acknowledge pets who have had a profound impact on your life.

Support Other Animals in Need

Donating your time at a Toronto Humane Society may help heal your heart after losing a pet. The animals will enjoy one-on-one interaction with a loving human, and you’ll also benefit from the furry cuddles and undivided attention. You don’t have to work directly with the animals if you’re not ready. A gift of your time in your pet’s memory may mean completing administrative tasks or cleaning. Apply to become a Toronto Humane Society volunteer here.

Wear Their Memory

From necklaces to bracelets, a beautiful way to customize a pet’s photograph or ashes can be through wearable jewelry. From monogrammed charms to pendants engraved with a paw print of your lost pet, wearing a memory is a beautiful way to keep our companions close to our hearts.
