A litter box may not be the most glamorous pet purchase, but for your cat, it’s one of the most important. The right litter box can make all the difference in keeping your cat comfortable — and your home clean. Here’s what to consider when choosing the perfect one. 

Size Matters

Cats prefer spacious litter boxes. A good rule of thumb is to choose a box that’s at least 1.5 times the length of your cat from nose to tail. Larger cats especially need extra room to turn around and dig comfortably. Most commercially available litter boxes are simply too small. Consider getting a large plastic underbed storage tote. 

Covered vs. Uncovered

• Covered boxes offer privacy and help contain odors but your cat is not used to a covered box, it might scare them off 

• Uncovered boxes are more open and inviting, making them a popular choice for picky cats.

Entry Style

• High-sided boxes help prevent litter scatter, especially for cats that dig enthusiastically. 

• Low-entry boxes are ideal for kittens, senior cats, or cats with mobility challenges. 

Self-Cleaning Options

Automatic litter boxes are convenient for busy pet parents, but they can certainly scare cats and lead to out of box elimination. We recommend you stay away from these, but if you are resolute about trying one out, keep a traditional box in your home as well.
