Pearl came to Toronto Humane Society as a stray.
Her intake exam was unremarkable – she was young, healthy and her teeth were in good condition.
A few days after Pearl arrived, our staff noted she was drooling and acting sedated. It passed quickly but our medical staff suspected she might be suffering from portosystemic shunt with hepatic dysfunction meaning she was likely born with an abnormal vessel that bypasses the liver. Although this is a serious condition, it can be managed with surgery, or with proper diet and medications.
After a series of tests and consultations with specialists, the options were weighed, and it was decided in Pearl’s best interest to treat with diet and medication. Pearl has responded well to her treatment and there have been no further episodes of concern.
Pearl has since been adopted.
