Why Dog Training Matters

| January 3, 2025

January is National Training Month, a perfect time to focus on the importance of dog training in building a strong, trusting relationship with your furry friend. Dog training is not just about teaching cues; it’s about enhancing communication, improving behaviour, and creating a well-balanced, confident dog that thrives in various environments. Whether you’ve just welcomed a puppy into your home or have a seasoned companion, dog training can make life more enjoyable for both of you.

At Toronto Humane Society, we understand that every dog is unique, with their own personality, challenges, and needs. That’s why we offer a range of Training & Behaviour Classes tailored to help dogs of all ages, breeds, and temperaments. From basic obedience to specialized skills, our programs are designed to set your dog up for success using compassionate, humane methods rooted in positive reinforcement. Here’s a look at the options we provide.

Group Training Classes

Group classes are an excellent way to build essential skills in a controlled, social setting. Dogs and their guardians work together in small groups, fostering learning and focus in an environment that introduces light distractions, teaching dogs how to act and react appropriately in real-world situations. Our group classes include:

  • Foundation Skills and Polite Family Dog Group Classes: Ideal for dogs and puppies above 16 weeks old, these classes focus on essential skills like walking on a leash, recall, and polite greetings. It’s a perfect place to begin building a foundation of trust, respect, and communication with your dog.
  • Puppy and Adolescent Dog Group Classes: Tailored specifically for younger dogs, these classes provide critical socialization opportunities while teaching good manners. Puppies and adolescent dogs will learn to sit, stay, come when called, and more.
  • Group Classes for Reactive Dogs and Fearful Dogs: Does your dog react to other dogs, people, or certain situations? We offer specialized classes to help manage reactivity and fear-based behaviours in a safe and supportive environment, focusing on positive reinforcement and desensitization techniques.
  • Agility, Scent Detection, Trick Training and Rally Obedience Classes: For dogs and guardians looking for something more advanced or fun, our specialized classes help your dog channel energy and focus into exciting activities like agility, scent detection, and rally obedience. These classes are great for mental stimulation, confidence building, and strengthening the bond between you and your dog.

Private Training Classes

If your dog needs more individual attention or has specific behaviour challenges, we also offer Private Training Classes. Our skilled trainers will work one-on-one with you and your dog to address concerns such as separation anxiety, leash reactivity, or aggression. These customized sessions allow for a personalized training plan that targets your dog’s unique needs.
