When to Skip the Walk (And What to Do Instead!)

| July 13, 2025

We know your dog looks forward to their daily walk—but sometimes, it’s just too hot to hit the pavement safely. Walking during a heatwave can lead to burned paws and even heatstroke.

Signs It’s Time to Skip the Walk:

  • Pavement is too hot for your hand (5-second test)
  • Temps above 26°C with high humidity
  • Your dog is displaying excessive panting before you leave
  • Your dog is older, a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, or a puppy

Cool Alternatives to a Hot Walk:

  • Play scent games inside using treats or kibble
  • Stuff and freeze a food puzzle toy
  • Have a splash party with a backyard kiddie pool
  • Try short walks in shaded areas early in the morning or after sunset

Your dog will thank you for the break—and you’ll be keeping them safe in the process
