Every day, Toronto Humane Society sees the powerful bond between people and their pets. For families facing difficult circumstances, that bond can be a source of comfort, stability and hope.
For Sabrina, her dog Bailey was more than a pet. She was her “sister”—a constant source of comfort and a steady anchor during a period of growing instability.
After bravely escaping a dangerous situation, Sabrina’s mother secured emergency housing for their family. But there was a heartbreaking problem: pets weren’t allowed.
With heavy hearts, Sabrina and her mother came to Toronto Humane Society, believing that saying goodbye to Bailey might be their only option.
It didn’t have to be.
Through Toronto Humane Society’s Animal Companion Temporary Care program, formerly known as Urgent Foster Care, Bailey was welcomed into a loving foster home. While Sabrina and her mother focused on finding safety and stability, Bailey remained safe and cared for—preserving the bond between them until she could return home.
Bailey’s story is one example of what it means to support both animals and the people who love them.
Sabrina and Bailey’s experience is reflected throughout our 2025 Annual Report, which highlights the many ways Toronto Humane Society is helping animals and families across the GTA.
In 2025:
These numbers represent far more than services delivered or animals supported.
They represent families who received help when they needed it. Pets who received care instead of going without. Bonds that were protected. And people who were given the opportunity to keep their families together during some of life’s most difficult moments.
The need for accessible animal care and support continues to grow. That’s why we’re looking ahead with an ambitious new Strategic Plan focused on creating a brighter future for animals and the people who love them.
Our work is rooted in a simple belief: people shouldn’t have to choose between their own safety and the safety of the animals they love.
With the support of our community, we can continue creating pathways to safety, stability, care and new beginnings—for more pets and the families who consider them part of the family.
Sabrina and Bailey’s story is just one of the many stories made possible by compassionate people who believe every animal deserves the chance to be safe, healthy and loved.
