A Tag, A Chip, A Way Home: The Reunification Power of Pet ID

| April 15, 2025

Every April during National Pet ID Week, we’re reminded of something simple yet vital: identification helps keep families together.

An estimated 1 in 3 pets will go missing at some point in their life. That’s a staggering statistic—and a heartbreaking one for families who may never see their pet again. But there’s hope: many of those stories can have happy endings, and it all starts with proper ID.

Lost, Not Homeless

A significant number of animals that arrive in shelters aren’t strays—they’re beloved pets who’ve lost their way. Whether they slipped out during a walk, panicked during fireworks, or darted out of an open door, these animals have homes. The problem? They can’t tell us where that home is.

Identification is the Key

Proper pet ID dramatically increases the chances of a reunion. Here’s how you can make sure your pet is protected:

ID Tags: Simple, affordable, and immediately visible—ID tags are the first line of defense. Ensure your pet wears a secure collar with a tag that includes:

  • Your name
  • Your current phone number
  • Any essential medical info

Microchips: These tiny devices are inserted under your pet’s skin and hold a unique ID number, which shelters, veterinarian offices, and animal control officers can scan. While microchips are great because they won’t fall off during your pet’s great escape, it is important to make sure your contact info is up to date in the microchip registry. If you’ve moved, changed your number, or recently adopted your pet, head to the registry website (like 24PetWatch if you adopted from Toronto Humane Society) and update your details.

Toronto Humane Society’s Public Veterinary Services clinic offers pet microchipping. Book your appointment online here.

GPS Collars and Tags: For an added layer of safety, especially in busy urban areas or during the chaotic winter season, GPS pet trackers are an excellent investment. Devices like the YIP tag are discreet, don’t require monthly fees, and work anonymously with nearby phones to help pinpoint your pet’s location in real time.

Whether you’re a new pet parent or have had your companion for years, take a few minutes this National Pet ID Week to ensure their identification is secure, visible, and current. It’s a small action that can lead to a lifetime of peace of mind—and it might just help get your best friend home safe when it matters most.
