Celebrate National Guinea Pig Month: Enhance the Welfare of Your Guinea Pigs

| March 19, 2025

National Guinea Pig Month is the perfect reflect on how we can improve the lives of the guinea pigs already in our loving homes. These small, social creatures need love, attention, and the right environment to thrive. Whether you’re a new guinea pig parent or have had one for years, there are simple ways to enhance their welfare and ensure they’re living their best life.

Tips to Enhance Your Guinea Pig’s Welfare at Home

  1. Provide a Spacious Living Area: Guinea pigs are active creatures and need plenty of space to move around. The minimum recommended cage size for one guinea pig is 7.5 square feet, but bigger is always better. If you have more than one guinea pig, you’ll need an even larger space. A roomy cage allows them to explore, exercise, and maintain their physical health.
  2. Ensure Proper Diet and Fresh Water: A healthy diet is vital for guinea pigs. They need unlimited access to fresh hay (which helps their digestive system) and a variety of fresh vegetables for nutrients. Guinea pigs also require vitamin C, so make sure to provide them vegetables like bell peppers, kale, and parsley. Don’t forget fresh, clean water every day—either in a water bottle or bowl.
  3. Offer Mental and Physical Enrichment: Guinea pigs are social animals and enjoy interaction with their humans and other guinea pigs. Spend quality time with them daily, offering hand-feeding, gentle petting, and playtime. Providing tunnels, chew toys, and hideouts will keep them mentally stimulated and entertained. Guinea pigs also love to explore, so setting up a playpen or safe area for them to roam outside their cage can be a great bonding experience.
  4. Create a Comfortable and Clean Habitat: Keep their environment clean and cozy by changing their bedding regularly to avoid odor buildup and health issues. Use soft, absorbent bedding like fleece or paper-based products. Be sure to clean their cage at least once a week to maintain a sanitary living space. Offering hay racks and safe hiding spots ensures your guinea pigs feel secure and comfortable.
  5. Bonded Pairs are Often Happier: Guinea pigs are highly social animals, and they tend to thrive in pairs. If you already have a guinea pig, consider adopting another one to create a bonded pair. Not only will this reduce loneliness, but guinea pigs often enjoy each other’s company, especially during quiet times like sleeping or foraging. However, introducing new guinea pigs to each other should be done gradually and carefully to ensure they form a positive bond.
