How to Manage Spring Allergies Without Missing Out on Pet Cuddles

| May 1, 2026

Spring is in the air — and so is pollen. For many people, that means sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. But if you share your home with a pet, allergy season can feel even more challenging.

The good news? You don’t have to choose between your health and your pet. With a few simple strategies, you can manage allergy symptoms and continue enjoying life with your furry companion.

Why Pets Can Make Allergies Feel Worse

Pet allergies aren’t actually caused by fur—they’re triggered by proteins found in:

  1. Dander (dead skin cells)
  2. Saliva
  3. Urine

During spring, pets can also carry pollen, dust, and other outdoor allergens into your home on their coat and paws, making symptoms more intense.

Tips to Manage Allergies at Home

1. Create Pet-Free Zones:Designate certain areas (like your bedroom) as pet-free spaces. This can give your body a break and help improve sleep during allergy season.

2. Clean More (But Smarter):Regular cleaning can make a big difference:

  • Vacuum frequently (ideally with a HEPA filter)
  • Wash bedding and blankets weekly
  • Dust surfaces to reduce buildup

Consistency is key to keeping allergens under control.

3. Groom Your Pet Regularly: Brushing your pet helps reduce loose fur and dander, but try to do it do it outside if possible or in a well-ventilated space. Bathing your pet occasionally can also help remove allergens from their coat (just be sure to use pet-safe products).

4. Wipe Paws After Walks: After spending time outdoors, your pet can bring pollen inside on their paws and fur. Keep a towel or pet-safe wipe by the door to quickly clean them off before they settle in.

5. Wash Your Hands After Petting:It’s a simple habit, but it helps prevent allergens from transferring to your face — especially your eyes and nose.

6. Use Air Purifiers: High-quality air purifiers with HEPA filters can help remove airborne allergens, including pet dander and pollen.

7. Talk to Your Doctor: If symptoms persist, a healthcare provider can recommend treatments like antihistamines or other allergy management options.

What About Your Pet?

Spring allergies don’t just affect people — pets can have allergies too. Watch for signs like:

  • Excessive scratching or licking
  • Red or irritated skin
  • Ear infections

If you notice these symptoms, consult your veterinarian for guidance.
