At just four-months-old, he was hit by a car and left for dead at the side of the road. Unable to walk and with no one around to help, a group of birds began to swarm his tiny body.
But as luck would have it, the sudden commotion alerted a passerby, who scooped Petey up, and took him to the nearest animal shelter. They then reached out to Toronto Humane Society for help.
Petey’s leg was so badly broken, it would need to be amputated. But there was another complication, one that needed to be addressed before any surgery was performed. Not only did the car’s impact break Petey’s leg beyond repair, but it also left him with serious nerve damage.
Petey’s nerve damage needed to improve before anything else happened. And so, our veterinarians closely monitored his condition, while providing him with medication and other supportive treatments to ensure he was not in any discomfort.
Luckily, Petey’s nerve damage improved to the point where our medical team could proceed with amputation. After a successful surgery, the team put together a treatment plan, which included a special diet and supplements.
Petey is on the road to recovery, but it will take time. He needs to be closely monitored while continuing his special diet. His environment, too, will always need to be set up in a way that promotes his wellbeing. But despite any challenges ahead, Petey’s life is improving little by little, every day.
It hurts to know that there are more heartbreaking stories out there. More animals like Petey waiting for you to turn their heartbreak into hope. Will you help the next animal?
