Recognizing Signs of Heatstroke in Dogs, Cats and Small Pets

| July 13, 2025

Heatstroke can come on fast—and it’s life-threatening. All pets are at risk in extreme heat, especially those with thick coats, short noses, or underlying health conditions.

Watch for These Signs in Dogs and Cats:

  • Heavy panting or drooling
  • Bright red gums or tongue
  • Lethargy or confusion
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Collapse or unresponsiveness

For Small Pets (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, etc.):

  • Drooling
  • Panting or open-mouth breathing
  • Lying stretched out or listless
  • Weakness or wobbling

What to Do:

  • Move your pet to a cool area immediately
  • Offer small sips of cool (not ice-cold) water
  • Wet their ears, paws, and body with lukewarm water
  • Contact a veterinarian right away—don’t wait

Being heat-aware can save lives. Know the signs and act fast.
