At Toronto Humane Society we strive to be a leader in animal welfare and innovation. This means that your gift to us goes in so many different directions, all of which impact animals for the better. It also means that your gift to us not only helps the animals of today, but our plans for how to stay on top of helping the animals of tomorrow, and next year, and the year after.
First, your donation goes towards the animals in our direct care. These animals are not only fed and given shelter, when they come into our care, they’re given an intake exam to determine what kind of vaccines and flea and tick prevention is required, as well as what kind of medical concerns they may need to have addressed. Then those needs are met. Our expert medical team will administer any vaccines or medications required, as well as perform surgery or provide extra round-the-clock care for animals that require it. The surgery isn’t just for lifesaving things – it’s for quality of life concerns. This could mean even “just” dental surgeries because it looks like an animal may be in discomfort from a couple of questionable teeth. Then, we have a dedicated Registered Veterinary Technician who comes up with rehabilitation plans for the animals that need it, whether for post-surgery care, or to lose weight, and everything in between. The animals also have behaviour assessments done upon their arrival, and our expert animal behaviour and training team will work with any animals that require a little extra TLC to set them up for success in their new forever families. This could mean working with inappropriate urination issues that aren’t medical, or it could mean working on building confidence so animals aren’t as fearful, and don’t redirect their fear to aggression, or any other number of concerns. The animals are either housed on site, or if possible, we send them to live with one of our amazing volunteer foster families while waiting for the medical and behaviour all clear, and then for their perfect person or persons to come take them to their forever place.
Toronto Humane Society doesn’t think that it’s enough to begin and end with the care of our animals, though. We know that in order for animals to be well cared for, their caregivers (in whatever form they come in) need support, just like any parent or caregiver. So we continue to look for areas where we can assist animal lovers in caring for those that they love to help keep animals out of the shelter system, and in their loving homes. At the moment, we have a number of impactful and community driven programs that help to preserve the human-animal bond and that your gifts support each and every day.
Urgent Foster Care – We know that if someone needs to go to a treatment facility, is facing housing instability or fleeing domestic violence, it’s not always possible to find someone who can care for their animals while they try to get their feet back under them. So we’ve partnered with many organizations in Toronto to provide temporary foster care for animals while their caregivers are getting the help that they need. Once the families are ready, the animal and the pet parents are reunited, instead of forcing animals to enter the shelter system.
Pet Parent Support Network – Sometimes when you love an animal so much, it’s easy to panic and think you’re facing a worst-case-scenario. With the Pet Parent Support Network, any animal caregiver can fill out a form online with questions or concerns they have about pet care, and receive a call from a dedicated team that can provide them with answers, options or solutions. Sometimes the right information, or providing options, can be the difference between someone needing to surrender a loved pet or keeping their family together.
These are just the tip of the iceberg for our community programs, and we’re always looking to find more ways to help. But one thing you can know for sure is that your money is going to a place of deep love and connection, and helping us to not only build families, but support and keep pets and their families together whenever possible because that is the best form of care anyone can provide.
