Fleas and Ticks: Staying Vigilant in Fall

| November 8, 2024

As the vibrant colours of Fall emerge and outdoor activities beckon, many pet parents may mistakenly believe that the risk of fleas and ticks diminishes with the cooler weather. However, this assumption can be dangerous. Fleas and ticks can still be very much active during the fall months, and it’s crucial for pet parents to remain vigilant to protect their furry companions from these pesky parasites.

Fleas and Ticks Can Still Be Active

While fleas and ticks are often associated with the warm summer months, they can still thrive in the fall. Here are some important factors to consider:

  • Temperature and Humidity: Fleas can survive in temperatures as low as 33°F (1°C), and if the conditions are humid, they can continue to reproduce and thrive even in cooler weather. Ticks, particularly adult blacklegged ticks (Ixodes), the species that transmits Lyme disease, remain active in cooler temperatures. Ticks will “quest” (actively seek hosts) any time it is above 4°C. In fact, fall is peak season for blacklegged ticks, making it crucial to stay vigilant.
  • Hibernation and Shelter: Many fleas and ticks seek refuge in warm areas, including your home. Fleas can live in carpets, upholstery, and pet bedding, while ticks may hide in leaf litter or tall grasses. As you and your pets venture outdoors during fall, you may unknowingly bring these parasites into your home.
  • Check Regularly: After spending time outside, especially in wooded or grassy areas, it’s essential to check both yourself and your pets for ticks. A quick tick check can prevent an attached tick from transmitting diseases like Lyme disease.

Tips for Preventative Treatments

To ensure your pets remain protected, consider the following tips for using preventative treatments:

  • Continue Year-Round Protection: Even as the seasons change, it’s essential to keep your pets on a year-round flea and tick preventative regimen. Consult your veterinarian for the best options tailored to your pet’s needs.
  • Check for Parasites Post-Adventure: After spending time outdoors, thoroughly check your pet (and yourself) for fleas and ticks. Pay close attention to areas like their ears, neck, belly, and between their toes. Remove any ticks immediately using fine-tipped tweezers, grasping the tick as close to the skin as possible and pulling straight out.
  • Regular Grooming: Regular grooming not only keeps your pet looking great but also helps identify any parasites that may be hiding in their fur. Use a flea comb to help catch fleas and flea dirt and brush your pet frequently to minimize their risk of infestations.
