November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month: Why Senior Pets are the Perfect Companions

| November 8, 2024

When it comes to adopting a new furry friend, it’s easy to be drawn to the playful energy of puppies or kittens. But senior pets, with their calm demeanor and loving personalities, make wonderful companions, too. November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month—a time to celebrate the joy and rewards that come with welcoming an older animal into your home. Senior pets have so much love to give, and they often come with benefits that make them the ideal addition to any family.

Here are just a few reasons to consider adopting a senior pet.

What You See Is What You Get

With senior pets, there are fewer surprises. Their personalities are fully developed, so you’ll know exactly who you’re bringing home. Whether they are laid-back loungers or spunky companions, senior pets have predictable behaviours, making it easier to find the perfect match for your lifestyle.

They’re Often More Trained

Many senior pets come with some level of training. Whether it’s knowing how to use the litter box, basic commands, or simply being well-socialized, senior pets are more likely to have experience living in a home environment. This can make the transition to their new home smoother for both you and your new pet.

They Have Lower Energy Needs

Older pets tend to be less active than their younger counterparts, which means they’re often a great choice for people who want a more relaxed companion. They’re more content with short walks, lounging around, and spending quiet time with their humans.

Senior Pets Need You

Older pets are often overlooked in shelters. They may spend longer waiting for homes simply because of their age, despite being just as loving and deserving as younger animals. By adopting a senior pet, you’re giving them a second chance at happiness and ensuring their golden years are filled with love.

Here are some of the incredible senior pets currently available for adoption at Toronto Humane Society.

Meet Tammy: The Graceful Grande Dame

Tammy, an 11.5-year-old tabby, has a tough exterior but a heart of gold. She’s independent, with a love for treats, soft blankets, and even learning new things like clicker training! Tammy thrives in a quiet environment and values her personal space, but once you’ve earned her trust, she’ll be your loyal companion for life. If you’re patient and looking for a cat who enjoys rolling in laundry and sitting by your side, Tammy is your girl.

Meet Scotty: The Laid-Back Feline Friend

Scotty is a calm, affectionate cat who loves neck scratches and gentle pets. At 13 years old, Scotty strikes the perfect balance between play and rest, enjoying wand toys and cuddling. His love language? Headbutts and gentle meows for attention. If you’re looking for a laid-back, loving cat, Scotty is the perfect companion.

Meet Linus: The Independant Gentleman

Linus, an 11-year-old gentleman, is a bit shy and prefers his own space but enjoys being near his humans on his own terms. Although he’s not a fan of being held, he loves routine, especially due to his well-managed diabetes. Linus is an ideal companion for someone with a calm home, ready to provide him with the care and attention he deserves.

Meet Kasha: The Regal Brushing Enthusiast

Kasha lives for the brush! This handsome 10-year-old cat, with his soft gray fur, loves nothing more than to be pampered. When he sees a brush, he’ll saunter over to you, purring with approval as you groom him. Kasha values his personal space and would thrive in a quiet home where he can enjoy plenty of brushing and a peaceful environment.

Meet Walt: The Gentle Explorer

Walt, a 7-year-old dog with a calm demeanor, enjoys leisurely walks and sniffing out new adventures. Though respectful of other dogs, he prefers to keep his distance, showing a peaceful and curious nature. With his gentle personality, Walt is looking for a patient and loving home where he can explore the world at his own pace and share quiet, affectionate moments with his family.

Meet Juniper: The Spirited and Active Girl

Juniper may be 7 years old, but this girl is full of energy! She loves being around people and going for walks. If you’re looking for a dog with spunk, Juniper will keep you on your toes with her fun personality. With a little patience and some tasty treats, Juniper can become the best walking buddy you’ve ever had!

Meet Kathy: The Resilient Sweetheart

Kathy is a 15-year-old Shih Tzu mix who has had her fair share of challenges. She has a heart murmur and chronic kidney disease, which require ongoing care and attention. However, these conditions are manageable, and Kathy is ready to live out her golden years with a family who will provide her with the love and care she needs. In return, she will offer companionship, loyalty, and plenty of snuggles. Kathy is an excellent reminder that even senior pets with special needs deserve to start their next chapter.

Meet Tino: The Sweet, Calm Senior

Tino loves leisurely walks and snuggles, always ready to soak up affection. Tino has been great with other dogs and enjoys liver treats and hot dogs. As he has chronic kidney disease, he’s looking for a special family to give him extra love and care.
