Spread the Love on International Rabbit Day: Adopt One of Our Long Stay Rabbits

| September 27, 2024

On International Rabbit Day, we celebrate the joy and companionship that these adorable animals bring to our lives. If you’re considering adding a new furry friend to your family, adopting a rabbit — or a bonded pair of rabbits — could be the perfect choice! Rabbits are not only affectionate and intelligent, but they also offer a unique pet experience compared to cats and dogs. Here’s why adopting a rabbit might just be the best decision you make this year.

The Benefits of Adopting a Rabbit

  • Affectionate and Sociable: Despite their independent nature, rabbits can form strong bonds with their human companions. Some bunnies, like bonded pairs, even rely on the company of another rabbit for companionship. Watching two rabbits groom and snuggle with each other is one of the most heartwarming experiences!
  • Great for Smaller Spaces: If you live in an apartment or smaller home, rabbits are an excellent option. Unlike dogs that need outdoor walks, rabbits can thrive indoors with plenty of free-roam space and a properly sized enclosure.
  • Playful and Curious: Rabbits are full of personality and love to explore. With a little enrichment, they’ll entertain you with binkies (a joyful jump and twist in the air), zoomies, and digging in tunnels.
  • Litter Box Trained: Many rabbits can be litter box trained, making cleanup easy. As long as they have their designated spot, rabbits are tidy creatures that enjoy a clean living space.

Rabbit Care 101

While rabbits may seem similar to cats and dogs in some ways, their care requirements are unique. Here’s how caring for a rabbit compares:

  • Diet: Rabbits primarily need a diet of hay, fresh vegetables, and rabbit pellets. Unlike cats and dogs, their sensitive digestive systems need constant grazing to stay healthy.
  • Exercise & Enrichment: Just like dogs need walks and cats need play, rabbits require free-roaming time in a bunny-proofed area. This helps them stretch their legs, hop, and satisfy their natural curiosity.
  • Socialization: Some rabbits are happy on their own, but many thrive in pairs. A bonded pair can keep each other company when you’re away, just like our sweet bunnies Marshall and Lily.
  • Health: Rabbits need regular grooming to maintain their coats and prevent issues like fur matting. Rabbit-savvy vets are also essential to ensure they receive proper care.

Why a Bonded Pair?

Rabbits are naturally social animals, and many thrive when they have a companion. Bonded pairs provide each other with emotional support, playtime, and grooming, which helps reduce stress and promotes overall well-being. Plus, adopting a pair means twice the love and companionship for you!

Meet Some of Our Long-Stay Rabbits!

Looking for the perfect bunny to adopt? Here are some of our long-stay residents who have been patiently waiting for over a year for their forever home:

Coal & Eli Hops

Coal & Eli Hops are the most endearing pair of rabbits you’ll meet. These bonded bunnies are inseparable, and their love for each other is so heartwarming to watch. Even on the most stressful days, coming home to find these two curled up together will just melt all your cares away. Though they don’t enjoy being held or overly petted, Coal and Eli love spending time with humans. They will often come running up to say hello with little nose bumps. Their favorite activity? Burrowing! Coal especially loves being lightly covered with a sheet, enjoying the sensation of finding his way out. Eli often joins in on the fun, and the two of them will continue this playful activity during their free-roam time.
