The 3-3-3 Rule: Helping Your New Pet Settle In

| August 22, 2025

Bringing a new pet into your home is an exciting and joyful experience—but it can also feel overwhelming, especially in the first few days and weeks. Whether you adopted a puppy, kitten or an adult pet, it’s important to remember that your new friend is adjusting to a completely new world. One of the best ways to understand and support them during this transition is by using the 3-3-3 Rule, a helpful guideline that breaks down the adjustment period after adoption.

What is the 3-3-3 Rule?

The 3-3-3 Rule is a simple way to anticipate your dog’s adjustment timeline:

  • 3 Days: This is the initial adjustment period. Your dog or cat may appear shy, withdrawn, or even scared. They might not eat much or show interest in their new surroundings. This is completely normal. Keep interactions calm, avoid overwhelming them with visitors, and provide a safe space where they can retreat if needed.
  • 3 Weeks: By this point, your pet starts to feel more comfortable with their new environment. They may begin to explore more, play, and interact with family members. Training routines, potty schedules, and household rules should be introduced consistently during this stage. Gentle guidance and positive reinforcement are key.
  • 3 Months: After about three months, most pets typically starting to feel truly “at home.” They understand the household rules, bond more deeply with you, and may be ready for more advanced training or socialization. Keep in mind that every pet is different—some may take longer.

Tips to Support Your Dog During the Adjustment Period

  • Create a Safe Space: Set up a comfortable area with a bed, water, and toys where your dog can retreat and feel secure.
  • Stick to Routines: Pets thrive on predictability. Feeding, walks, playtime, and bedtime routines help them feel secure.
  • Patience is Everything: Your pet may have accidents, chew on things, or act shy. Avoid scolding and focus on gentle guidance.
  • Monitor Health: Schedule a vet visit if you haven’t already. This ensures your pet is healthy and up to date on vaccinations (all pets adopted from Toronto Humane Society are up to date on their vaccines at the time of adoption).
  • Ask for Help: If behaviour challenges arise, reach out to a professional trainer or behaviour consultant for support. Toronto Humane Society’s training team is always a click away for support.

 Remember: Every Pet is Unique

While the 3-3-3 Rule is a helpful guideline, your pet may adjust faster or slower. Celebrate small wins and focus on building trust, love, and positive experiences. Your patience and understanding now will pay off in a lifetime of companionship and happiness.
