Why Does My Dog Tilt Their Head?

| May 8, 2026

It’s one of the most endearing things dogs do: your dog hears a sound or a word, and suddenly their head tilts to the side. But what’s really behind this adorable behaviour?

Head tilting in dogs is often linked to curiosity and focus. When your dog tilts their head, they may be trying to better understand what they’re hearing. This could include the tone of your voice, a new word, or an unfamiliar sound.

Dogs rely heavily on auditory cues to interpret the world around them. A head tilt may help them adjust their ears to pinpoint sounds more clearly or process information more effectively.

There’s also a social component. Dogs are highly attuned to human behaviour and communication. When they tilt their head, they may be responding to your facial expressions or trying to engage with you.

Interestingly, some research suggests dogs may be more likely to tilt their heads when hearing words they recognize — especially if those words are associated with something exciting, like a “walk” or a “treat”.

While head tilting is typically harmless and simply part of how dogs communicate and learn, sudden or frequent head tilting accompanied by balance issues could signal a medical concern. If you notice changes in your dog’s behaviour, it’s always best to consult your veterinarian.
